Belfast’s very own award winning Irish Coleen, Gráinne Holland from Laochra Loch Lao CLG, has today, 22/6/10, launched two new wall murals at Divis Street the gateway to West Belfast’s Gaeltacht Quarter.

The eye-catching pieces of artwork, executed by local mural artists Dan Devenney and Marty Lyons are located in a series of murals on what is known as the International Wall in Divis Street at the bottom of the Falls Road.

The official launched took place to coincide with the start of the annual tourist season which will get into full swing by the end of this month.

Written on Forbairt Feirste mural is the original version of the ninth century poem known as ‘The Blackbird of Belfast’, along with an English language translation of the same. The mural itself draws on the imagery of Laochra Loch Lao CLG, the Gaeltacht Quarter Gaelic football team.

Forbairt Feirste and Laochra Loch Lao jointly sponsored this beautiful mural full of traditional imagery and associations.

A second mural was simultaneously launched celebrating the role of local Irish Language community radio station Raidió Fáilte which broadcasts 24 hours per day live from Cultúrlann MacAdam Ó Fiaich in the heart of the West Belfast Gaeltacht Quarter.

Rinne Foireann Peile na Ceathrún Ghaeltachta eácht bhrodúil eile do Bhéal Feirste agus iad ag Comórtas Peile na Gaeltachta 2010. Ghlac 25 d’fhoirne sán iomlán páirt sa chomórtas i mBéal Átha Mhuirthead thar dheireadh na seachtaine 4ú go 7ú Meitheamh, le cumainn ó Chorcaigh, Ciarraí, Tir Chonaill, Gaillimh, Maigh Eo, Port Láige agus Londáin. Thug Laochra Loch Lao cath fíochmhar do na Dúnaibh as Tír Chonaill agus chaill siad sa deiread leis an bhearna is lú de chúilín amháin i ndiaidh am bréise. Thaisteal timpeall 50 tacadóir an 250 míle do Bhéal Atha Mhuirthead don chomórtas náisíunta bliantiúil.

Bhí scuad na Laochra neartaithe i mbliana le réalt Aontroma Pádraig Ó Cuinneagáin, a scoráil dhá chúl gleoite agus slam de phointí agus a chríochnaigh le héacht scorála pearsanta do 2-8. Bíodh is gur thosaigh na Laochra go fadalach, d’éirigh leo go fóill comhscór a bhaint amach ag leath-ama i gcead do chúl álainn ó chos Uí Chuinneagáin.

Tharraing na Dúnaibh trí pointe ar ais tar éis daofa ionadaí dleathach a chuir ar an pháirc in áit an fear lár pháirce a cuireadh ón pháirc, rud nár fhág ach pointe amháin idir na foirne ag deireadh na chéad thréimhse, 2-13 chuig 2-12.

Mar sin fein, is iad na Dúnaibh a thosaigh an dara tréimhse d’am bréise ní ba láidre nuair a scoráil siad dhá chúilíní gleoite sular bhain siad cic píonóis, a scoráil siad, rud a chuir ceithre cuilín idir na foirne. Tharraing cúl mall ó Chiarán Ó Coinn an bearna idir na foirne ar ais chuig an chuid is lú ar 3-14 chuig 3-13 .

Rinne an reiteoir, a raibh drochlá san oifig aige, neámhaird ar scairt dhéanach ar chic phíonóis do na Laochra tar éis feall ar Ó Cuinneagáin. Thug sé cic saor amach seachas cic éirice no cic 45. Rinne na Dúnaibh ceiliúradh ar bhua iontach s’acu i ndiadh coimhlint epiciúil a chonaic 89 bomaite de pheil. Chur trachtaire Ráidio na Gaeltachta, Seán Bán Breathnach síos ar an chluiche mar chath epiciúil, agus an cluiche ab fhearr sa chomórtas le 20 bliain.

Dúirt Cathaoirelach na Laochra, Jake Mac Siacais:

‘”Tugann an comórtas seo Gaeil le chéile ó gach cearh den tír agus iad ag ceiliúradh le chéile. Téann muid in adharca a chéile ar an pháirc ach tá comradaíocht ann as an pháirc nach bhfuighfear aon áit eile. Ó thosaigh muid ag imirt sa chomórtas, thóg muid cairdeas buan le Gaeil ó neart Gaeltachtaí, ó Oileáin Arainn chuig an Rinn, Port Láirge.

‘Bhí paineál iontach againn do 27 imreoir agus bhí am ar doigh acu. labhrann siad uilig Gaeilge agus dúirt lucht eagraithe an chomortais arís agus arís eile gur thug muid dea-shampla d’fhoirne eile ón Ghaeltacht oifigiúil, áiteanna ina bhfuil an Ghaeilge labhartha lág, ina measc. Ba mhaith liom buíochas a ghabháil leis an lucht tacaíochta a thaisteal an bealach uilig go Mhaigh Eo. Chuaigh siad i bhfeidhm go mór ar dhaoine óna Ghaeltachtaí eile a fuair spreagadh as úsaid na Gaeilge s’acu ar feadh deireadh na seachtaine. beidh an comórtas i gCloch Cheann Fhaola i nGaeltacht Thír Chonaill ar an bhliain seo chugainn agus tá muid ag dúil go mór le bheith ionadaíocht ar Bhéal Feirste agus tuilleadh dul chun cinn a dhéanamh ar pháirc na péile.”

The Belfast Gaeltacht’s Irish language football team Laochra Loch Lao did their city and county proud last week 4th to 7th June in the annual Gaeltacht football competition 2010. In total, 25 teams took part from Cork, Kerry, Donegal, Galway, Mayo, Meath, Waterford and London.

But the 50 supporters who travelled the 250 miles to Mayo’s Beal an Mhuirthead (Belmullet) for the Annual, national competition. The Laochra team were boosted by Antrim ace Paddy Cunningham, who scored two scorching goals and a hatful of points and finished with a personal tally of 2-8.

Laochra Loch Lao had a dramatic and heroic battle with Donegal’s An Dúnaibh (Downings) – losing by the narrowest margin after extra time.

Despite starting slowly in the first half, the Laochra still managed to come in level at half time thanks to a stunning goal from Paddy Cunningham. The laochra stepped it up in the second half and were by far the stronger team. Points from Niall Mac an Lia, Feargal Mac Ionnrachtaigh and another fantastic individual major from Cunningham put the Laochra four points up normal time while the Dúnaibh lost their midfielder, Shane Ó Gallchóir to two yellow cards.

But Na Dúnaibh scatched an unlikely draw when they scored a goal and a point late into a full seven minutes of injury time. The Laochra went two points up in the first period of extra time with two points from Mac Ionnrachtaigh and scores from Cunnigham and Ciarán Ó Coinn. The Dúnaibh pulled three points back having installed a legal replacement for their midfielder who had been sent off, leaving only a point between the teams at the end of the first period, 2-13 to 2-12. However, the Dúnaibh started the second period of extra time very strongly with two fantastic points before winning a penalty which put them they scored putting four points between the teams.

A late goal from Laochra midfielder Ciarán Ó Coinn brought the score back to the minimum deficit at 3-14 to 3-13 with a two minutes remaining. A late shout a penalty after a foul on Paddy Cunningham was ignored by the referee who had a difficult day at the office. He rewarded a free out rather than a penalty or a 45 before finally blowing time on an epic encounter after 89 minutes of football. The Dunaibh celebrated a fantastic victory while the heartbroken Laochra team and their fans rued what might have been.

Radio presenter Seán Bán Breathnach described the game as an epic battle and the best in the competition for 20 years.

Laochra chairman Jake Mac Siacais said:

“Since we’ve started playing here we’ve made long-lasting friendships with Gaels from many Gaeltachtaí, from the Aran Islands to the Rinn in Waterford.”

Jake added: “We had a great panel of 27 players and they had a fantastic time. All of them speak Irish and it was remarked upon many times by the organisers that they set a great example for other teams who may come from areas of the official Gaeltacht where Irish is not so strong.
“And I’d like to thank the large number of supporters who travelled all this way. Many people from the other Gaeltachtaí were impressed and even inspired by their use of Irish the whole weekend. Next year the competition takes place in Cloch Cheann Fhaola in the Donegal Gealtacht and we’re already looking forward to representing Belfast there – and to making more progress on the football field.”

“This competition is really about the Irish speakers around the country celebrating together. We go head-to-head on the field but there’s a camaraderie off the field that you don’t find anywhere else.

I had a wonderful time with these lovely, well-mannered, inquisitive pupils, who are a credit to their school and their community and who enlivened the event especially at the questuion and answer section. I would like to thank the school authorities for inviting me in and I would especially like to thank Derek Whitcroft who did an excellent job in facilitating the event. I would also like to the children who were stars, each and everyone of them.”

Forbairt Feirste’s Irish Means Business, Project Worker, Feargal Mac Ionnrachtaigh gave a lecture today 9/6/10 on the Irish language revival to newly qualified teachers in St Mary’s University College as they prepare for their graduation as teachers in the Irish Medium Sector. Around 25 pupils were in attendance from the PGCE course and the secondary school teaching qualification.

Speaking about the lecture, Post-Primary course co-ordinator, Jill Garland, stated:

” We are very grateful to Feargal and to Forbairt Feirste for giving this lecture to our newly-qualified students. We believe that its very important to provide new teachers with the historical context of Irish language activism in our revival before they begin their teaching careers. The lecture had this effect and they greatly enjoyed it.”

Adding to this, Mac Ionnrachtaigh stated:

“We are very happy and willing to work with St Mary’s University College, that is situated in the heart of the Gaeltacht Quarter. We commend the course co-ordinators and would like to give heartfelt congratulations to the newly qualified teachers who will be celebrating their graduation tomorrow on 10/6/10. They are a central part of our Irish language revival and they will play a pioneering role in the future in developing strong school communities throughout the North.”

Gradam Náisiúnta Gaeltachta bainte ag na Feirstigh – Arís / Belfast scoops National Gaeltacht Award – Again

Tá gradam ‘An Cailín Gaelach’ de chuid Chomórtas Peile na Gaeltachta bainte don dara bliain as a chéile ag Ceathrú Ghaeltachta Bhéal Feirste.

Bronnadh an Gradam ar Ghráinne Holland, ar ceoltóir í leis an bhuíon cheoil Casadh, Oíche Dhomhnaigh 6ú Meitheamh in Óstán Broadhaven Béal a’ Mhuirthead, Chondae Mhaigh Eo.

Onóir mhór a bhí ann do Chathair Bhéal Feirste an duais a thabhairt leo don dara bliain as a chéile. Arna bhronnadh an ghradaim ar Ghráinne rinne Seán Bán Breathnach ó Raidió na Gaeltachta tagairt don tiomántas a bhí ag muintir Bhéal Feirste agus ag Laochra Loch Lao CLG don Ghaeilge agus ghuigh sé gach rath ar Laochra Loch Lao ar an pháirc imeartha sa todhchaí. Dúirt Seán Bán nar mhiste leis féin an Comórtas a fheiceáil i mBéal Feirste Cois Cuain amach anseo.

Bhí Laochra Loch Lao páirteach i gComórtas Peile na Gaeltachta i mBéal a’ Mhuirthead ón 5ú go dtí an 7ú Meitheamh. ”Is é seo an ceathrú bliain a ghlac na Laochra páirt sa chomórtas agus i mbliana bhí mí-ádh orthu nuair a chaill siad amach, tar éis am breise, do Na Dúnaibh CLG Tír Chonáill nach raibh ach an farasbarr is lú d’aon chúilín acu.

Ag labhairt dó tar éis an chomórtais dúirt Jake Mac Siacais, cathaoirleach Laochra Loch Lao:

” Ba mhaith liom ar dtús ár mbuíochas a ghabháil le lucht eagraithe an Chomórtais do 2010 Béal a’ Mhuirthead CLG. Ba mhaith liom comhghairdeas a ghabháil le Gráinne, a raibh an gradam seo tuillte go maith aici. Bhí sí ina hambasadóir iontach do Bhéal Feirste agus d’Aontroim. Ba mhaith liom mo bhuíochas a ghabháil le gach duine a bhí bainteach leis an fhoireann mar gheall ar an iarracht eipiciúil a rinne siad agus faoi dheireadh ba mhaith liom comhghairdeas a ghabháil leis Na Dúnaibh CLG ar bhua iontach. Maith sibh go léir.”

The coveted Comórtas Peile na Gaeltachta ‘Cailín Gaelach’ award has been scooped by Belfast’s Gaeltacht Quarter for the second year running.

The award was presented to Gráinne Holland, a musician with the traditional group Casadh, on Sunday evening June 6th in the Broadhaven Hotel in Belmullet Co Mayo.

It is a huge honour for Belfast to have scooped the prestigious award for the second year running. Making the presentation, Raidió na Gaeltacht’s Seán Bán Breathnach made special mention of Belfast and Laochra Loch Lao CLG’s determined promotion of the Irish Language and wished Loachra Loch Lao future success on the field of play. Seán Bán said that he personally would be delighted to see the competition being hosted in Belfast in the coming years.

Laochra Loch Lao CLG were participants in Comórtas Peile na Gaeltachta in Belmullet, County Mayo, from June 5th until June 7th. This is the fourth year in which the Gaeltacht Quarter team has participated in the competition and on this occasion they were unlucky to lose out to Na Dúnaibh CLG after extra time with the narrowest margin of a single point.

Speaking after the competition Laochra Loch Lao chair Jake Mac Siacais said:

” Firstly I want to give thank the organisers of this year’s competion Béal a’ Mhuirthead CLG. I want to congratulate Gráinne who was a very worthy recipient of this recognition and who was a great ambassador for Belfast and Antrim. I want to thank all those associated with the team for a huge, indeed epic effort, and finally I want to congratulate Na Dúnaibh on a great win. Well done to all.”

Bhí Feargal Mac Ionnrachtaigh ó Forbairt Feirste mar fhear an tí inné, 24ú Bealtaine, ag ócáid stairiúil ar Choláiste Feirste nuair a bhronn an tAire Oideachais, Caitríona Ruane, teastais OCN i gCeannaireacht an Óige ar 15 duine óga as Béal Feirste. Cuireadh an cúrsa ar fáil trí mheán na Gaeilge den chéad uair i stair an chúrsa i ndiaidh don Roinn Oideachais maoiniú a chur ar fáil do sheirbhísí óige trí Ghaeilge i mbliana tríd an BOLB (Bord Oideachais is Leabharlainne Bhéal Feirste). Bhí an OCN i gCeannaireacht an Óige mar chuid de seo agus Tarlach Ó Branagáin as Forbairt Feirste a rinne an t-aistriúcháin. Orliath Nic Siacais ó ‘Training for Life’, Iontaobhas Forbartha Uachtar Chluanaí agus Ciarán Mac Giolla Bhéin, Oifigeach Óige le Foras na Gaeilge a bhí mar éascaitheoirí ar an chúrsa.

Ag caint dó ar an chúrsa, dúirt Mac Giolla Bhéin: “Ar feadh an chúrsa, thaispeáin na daoine óga seo leibhéal iontach tiomantais a spreag mé féin agus na daoine fásta thart orthu. Bíonn siad ar fad ag obair go deonach le cumainn óige Ghaelacha éagsúla agus is eiseamláirí iontacha iad do phobal na Gaeilge sa chathair seo agus tá an chreidiúint seo iomlán tuillte acu. Tá sé oiriúnach go raibh an tAire féin, an Bhean Uasail Caitríona Ruane, a chuir an maoiniú ar fáil don chúrsa, agus go raibh sí féin ar fáil chun na teastais a bhronnadh. Tá muid thar a bheith buíoch fosta don BOLB, go háirithe seirbhís Óige s’acu a bhí iontach cuidiúil fud fad an chúrsa. De réir a chéile, tá muid ag briseadh síos ar na constaicí agus tá i bhfád níos mó seirbhísí ar fáil anois do na mílte daoine óga atá ag freastal ar Ghaelscoileanna ar fud an tuaiscirt.’

Ag cur leis an méid seo, i ndiaidh na hócáide, dúirt Feargal Mac Ionnrachtaigh, atá mar ionadaí Forbairt Feirste ar Fhóram na nÓg:

“Cé gurbh í seo an chéad uair a raibh a leithéid seo de chúrsa á stiúradh trí mheán na Gaeilge, is suntasach gur éirigh leis na daoine óga uilig an cháilíocht a bhaint amach. Is cáilíocht aitheanta í an OCN a bheirfeas spreagadh do na daoine óga leanúint ar aghaidh ag gníomhú agus ag obair go deonach taobh istigh den earnáil óige Ghaelach. Beidh an Fóram ag tógáil air seo amach anseo agus ag cumasú na hearnála óige le tuilleadh oiliúna agus seirbhísí ar fud an tuaiscirt.’

Feargal Mac Ionrachtaigh from Forbairt Feirste chaired proceedings yesterday, 24th May, at a history-making event in Coláiste Feirste where Education Minister, Caitríona Ruane presented OCN Leadership in Youth Work certificates to 15 young people from Belfast. The course was provided through the medium of Irish for the first time in its history due to funding provided by the Department of Education for Irish Medium Youth work through the BELB (Belfast Education and Library Board). The OCN, Leadership in Youth Work was part of this and Tarlach Ó Branagáin from Forbairt Feirste translated the course. Orliath Nic Siacais from ‘Training for Life’ in the Upper Springfield Development Trust and Ciarán Mac Giolla Bhéin, Youth Officer with Foras na Gaeilge were the course facilitators.

Speaking about the course, Mac Giolla Bhéin said:

‘‘Throughout the course, the young people have been driven and have shown a level of commitment which has inspired me and many of the older people around them. They all work voluntarily with local Irish Medium Youth Clubs and are a credit to Belfast’s Irish language community and are fully deserving to be recognised in this way. It is also fitting that the Minister, who made the funds available for this course, will be there to present them with their certificates. We are also extremely grateful to the BELB and especially their Youth Services department who have been very helpful and accommodating throughout. Gradually, barriers are being broken down and more and more services are being made available through the medium of Irish, including youth services which will cater for the thousands of young people attending Irish medium schools throughout the North.”

Adding to this after the event, Feargal Mac Ionnrachtaigh, who represents Forbairt Feirste on Fóram na nÓg (Irish-Medium Youth Forum) stated:

“Given that it was the first time that a course such as this has been delivered entirely through the medium of Irish we are extremely pleased that all of the young people have managed to gain a pass. The OCN is a recognised qualification which, hopefully, will encourage these young people to continue volunteering and working in the Irish youth service sector. The Forum aims to build on this in the near future by building capacity and additional services in the Irish Language youth sector throughout the North.”

With the National Gaeltacht Competition edging ever closer, time is fast disappearing to book a seat on the supporters bus of Gaeltacht Quarter Gaelic Football team, Laochra Loch Lao CLG.

Formed in 2006 as a Forbairt Feirste project, Laochra Loch Lao have been taking part in the National Gaeltacht competition since 2007. They were registered as an official club with the Antrim County Board and it is as county representatives and representatives of Belfast’s Irish Language speaking community that they take part in the competition.

This year’s competition will be held in Belturbet, Co Mayo between 4 and 7 June 2010. The club has received generous funding from the Ultach Trust to provide a free supporters bus that will leave from Cultúrlann McAdam Ó Fiaich around 4 o clock on Friday, 4 June and return on Monday 7 June.

According to Laochra Loch Lao CLG secretary, Feargal Mac Ionnrachtaigh, ‘We are very grateful to the Ultach Trust for giving Belfast Gaels the opportunity to attend this fantastic competition in Mayo. It is an amazing weekend filled with Football, Music and Craic with thousands of Gaels from thoughout the country and its nearby islands. This is an historic occasion for Belfast’s Irish speaking community and BBC will be in attendance in making to half-hour documentaries based on the Laochra.’

‘We would greatly appreciate a loud and lively following in Mayo to inspire us on the Football field.’

Bus organiser, Cáitlín Ní Ruanaidh stated, ‘This bus is provided for Irish speakers only and will be free of charge for the entire weekend. In addition, we can arrange lodgings for the weekend for those on the bus if they ensure that have reserved a seat.’

‘We only have space for 49 people on the bus and there isn’t much space remaining at the minute. I would advise anyone interested in going to the competition and supporting the Laochra, to contact myself as soon as possible on cniruanaidh@googlemail.com or 07763163026.

Bhí Oifigeach Tionscadail, Gnó le Gaeilge, Forbairt Feirste, Feargal Mac Ionnrachtaigh i láthair ag lainseáil oifigiúil Campa Chormaic 2010 ar an tseachtain seo caite in Óstán Chúirt na Canála ar an Iúr. Is mar ionadaí Bhéal Feirste ar Campa Chormaic Aontroma atá ag teacht cois cuain den chéad uair i mí Lúnasa na bliana seo, a bhí Feargal i láthair ar an lá.

Táthar Campa Chormaic a reáchtáil ar bhonn bliantúil le sé bliana anuas i ndílchuimhne ar an Ghael Iomráiteach agus peileadóir Uile-Réalt, Cormac Mac an Áilín a d’éag go tragóideach sa bhliain 2004 de bharr láigeacht chroí neamhghnách. Tá an campa bunaithe ar na suimeanna b’ansa do Chormac mar a bhí, an Ghaeilge, aclaíocht Ghaelach agus oidhreacht dhúchais s’againne i gcoitinne. Tá sé dírithe ar bhuachaillí agus cailiní idir 9 agus 14 agus bheireann sé deis daofa an teanga agus an cultúr s’againne a fhoghlaim maraon le páirt a ghlacadh i bpeil Ghaelach, iománaíocht agus camógaíocht.

Lainseáladh Campa Chormaic 2010 ag mórLaoch Iománaíochta Chill Chainnigh, Henry Shefflin agus réalt i mbéal forbartha, Co an Dúin, Martin Clarke a dhearbhaigh go bhfuil an campa á bhogadh i 2010 go Co. Aontroma agus Co. Dhoire i ndiaidh bliain rathúil anuraidh i gContae an Dúin.

“Bunaíodh Campa Chormaic ag an tús i mBranty, Co Thír Eoghain agus anuraidh ghlac muid é taobh amuigh de Thír Eoghain den chéad uair,” arsa ball coiste, Campa Chormaic, Paul McAnallen.

“D’éirigh go geal leis an champa i gCaisleán Uidhilín agus tá muid ar bís an campa a thabhairt go Doire agus go hAontroim i mbliana den chéad uair, áiteanna a mbeidh muid ag déanamh aithrise ar an chur chuige rathúil a nascann an spórt agus an teanga le chéile ó champaí Chontae an Dúin agus Thir Eoghain.”

“D’fhorbair Campa Chormaic mar chlochmhíle lárnach den fhéilire chultúrtha agus spórtúil i gCo. Thír Eoghain, Co. an Dúin agus anois beidh an cás amhlaidh i gCo. Aontroma agus i gCo.
Mar dhuine de lucht eagraithe ar champa Aontroma, dúirt Feargal Mac Ionnrachtaigh:

“Tá muid iontach sásta an campa iontach seo a éascú i mBéal Feirste den chéad uair ariamh. Nascann sé ár gcluichí dúchasacha agus foghlaim na Gaeilge le chéile ar dhóigh nuálach, a neartaíonn an teanga labhartha taobh amuigh de gheataí na scoile. Tá muid bródúil, agus iontach buíoch gur thug Clann Chormaic agus coiste Campa Chormaic féin an deis dúinn an campa seo a eagrú.”

‘Beidh Campa Chormaic Co. Beidh ranganna Gaeilge agus ceoil, siúlóidí staire, turasanna agus ceachtanna peile agus iománaíochta ar fáil le réaltaí áitiúla ón CLG le linn an champa.’

Forbairt Feirste’s, Irish Means Business, project worker, Feargal Mac Ionnrachtaigh was in attendance at the official launch of Campa Chormaic 2010 in the Canal Court Hotel in Newry last week as one of the Belfast representatives of Campa Chormaic Aontroma which is coming to Belfast for the first time in August this year.

Campa Chormaic is organised annually for the past six years in Tyrone in memory of the famous Tyrone Gael and All-Star Footballer, Cormac Mac Anallen, who died tragically in 2004 of a rare heart condition. The camp is based on the biggest passions of Cormac as is the Irish Language, Gaelic Athleticism and our native heritage in general. It is aimed at 9-14 year old boys and girls and offers them the chance to learn Irish culture and language and participate in football, hurling and camogie.

The 2010 Campa Chormaic was launched this year by Kilkenny hurling giant, Henry Shefflin and the rising star of Co. Down football Martin Clarke who announced that 2010 sees the Camp move into Co. Antrim and Co. Derry following the successful Co. Down Camp last year.

‘Campa Chormaic was originally set up in Brantry, Co Tyrone and last year was the first time we had taken the camp outside of Tyrone. ’ Said Campa Chormaic committee member Paul McAnallen.

‘The Camp in Castlewellan was really successful and this year we are delighted to take the camp into Antrim and Derry for the first time, where we can replicate the successful formula of language and sport from the Tyrone and Down camps.’

‘The Campa Chormaic has grown into an important cultural and sporting milestone in the GAA calendar in Tyrone, Down and now Antrim and Derry. I think it is a fantastic initiative and I am delighted to be able to give it support.’ Said Henry Shefflin.

As one of the Antrim camp organisers, Feargal Mac Ionnrachtaigh, stated, ‘We are delighted to bring this fantastic camp to Belfast for the first time. It combines our native games and Irish language learning together in an innovative way and strengthens the living language outside the school gates.
D’éirigh go geal le foireann Peile na Ceathrún Gaeltachta, Laochra Loch Lao CLG ar an Satharn 15ú Bealtaine nuair a bhain siad Comórtas Uí Cheallaigh ag páirc Lámh Dhearg.

Comórtas úr in ómós don dlíodóir iomráiteach agus iarchathaoirleach ar Bhord Aontroma, Oilibhéar Ó Ceallaigh a d’éag go tragóideach anuraidh, atá sa chomórtas. Laochra Loch Lao a d’eagraigh an comórtas agus fuair sé stádas oifigiúil mar chomórtas Chumann Lúthchleas Gael de chuid Deisceart Aontroma.

I mbliana, ghlac ceithre fhoireann páirt sa chomórtas mar a bhí, Laochra Loch Lao, Naomh Úna, Gort na Móna agus Lámh Dhearg CLG. Bhain Laochra Loch Lao an chéad chluiche leathcheannais in éadan Naomh Úna le farasbarr de sheacht gcúilín. Mar sin féin, thosaigh siad go fadálach sa chéad leath agus bhíodar ag baint le cúilín amháin ag leath ama. Tháinig na Laochra ar ais chucu féin sa dara leath inar scóráil siad 9 cúilín gan freagra díreach i ndiaidh do Naomh Úna iad a scanrú le cúl a scóráil siad ag tús an dara leath. Bhuaigh Cumann Lámh Dhearg an dara cluiche leathcheannais in éadan Gort na Móna le dhá chuilín nuair a d’aimsigh siad cúl mall sa dara leath i ndiaidh a bheith taobh thiar de Ghort ar feadh an chluiche.

Sa chluiche ceannais, bhí an lámh in uachtar ag na Laochra in éadan Lámh Dhearg. Bhí an ghaoth ag na Laochra sa chéad leath ach níor ghlac siad go leor dá gcuid seansanna, rud a chiallaigh nár críochnaigh siad ach 3 a 1 chun tosaigh ag leath ama. Mar sin féin, d’imir siad peil gleoite sa dara leath agus fuair siad an lámh in uachtar go furasta ar Lámh Dhearg le scór deiridh do 1.11 go 1.1.

Bhronn Jim Murray Cathaoirleach Bhord Aontroma agus Aogán Ó Fearghail, Uachtarán Chomhairle Uladh an corn álainn ar chaptaen na Laochra, Cathal Ó Ceallaigh, mac d’Oilibhéar. Ag labhairt dó ag an bhronnadh, dúirt Aogán:

“Is mór an onóir domh an corn seo a bhronnadh óir go raibh seanaithne agam ar Oilibhéar Ó Ceallaigh ón tréimhse a chaith muid ar Chomhairle Uladh le chéile. Gael go smior a bhí ann agus tá an comórtas seo breá fóirsteanach mar dhílchuimhne air. Tréaslaím le Laochra Loch Lao CLG as an chomórtas a eagrú agus an corn a bhaint. Cuireann seo le fís s’agaibh fán Ghaeilge agus Cumann Lúthchleas Gael a nascadh le chéile mar is ceart agus is deá-shampla sibh don chuid eile den tír. Táim cinnte de go rachaidh an comórtas seo ó neart go neart amach anseo.”

Arna tógáil an choirn dó, dúirt Cathal Ó Ceallaigh:

“Tá mé iontach bródúil an corn seo a thógáil mar chaptaen ar Laochra Loch Lao agus tá clann s’agam iontach buíoch d’achan duine a chuidigh linn an comórtas seo a reáchtáil. Ba mhaith liom buíochas a ghabháil fosta leis na cumainn a ghlac páirt, le Bord Dheisceart Aontroma, d’óstaithe an chomórtais, Lámh Dhearg CLG, cumann Naomh Gall a chuir Corn ar fáil, na réiteoirí agus le Laochra Loch Lao CLG ach go háirithe. Tá muid ag dúil leis an bhliain seo chugainn agus is ullmhúcháin den scoth é an bua seo do chomórtas Peile na Gaeltachta i Maigh Eo’

Gaeltacht Quarter football team, Laocha Loch Lao CLG scored success on Saturday May 15th when they won The Oliver Kelly competition at Lámh Dhearg park. This competition was organised in honour of the prominent solicitor and former Antrim County Board Chairperson, Oliver Ó Ceallaigh, who died tragically last year. Laochra Loch Lao CLG organised the competition which got official recognition as a South Antrim GAA competition.

This year, four teams took part in the competition; Laochra Loch Lao, Naomh Úna, Gort na Móna and Lámh Dhearg CLG. Laochra Loch Lao beat Naomh Úna in the first game with an gap of seven points. However, they started slowly in the first half and were winning by only a single a point at half time. They resorted to form in the second half and scored nine unanswered points directly after a Naomh Úna goal at the beginning of the second half had given them a scare. Lámh Dhearg won the second semi-final against Gort na Móna by two points when they scored a late goal after trailing the Gorts for the entire game.

In the final, the Laochra had the upper hand against Lámh Dhearg. Despite having the wind in their favour in the first half, the Laochra never made enough of their chances which meant they only finished 3-1 up at half-time. However, they played fantastic football in the second half and easily dispatched Lámh Dhearg on a final scoreline of 1.11 to 1.1.

The beautiful trophy was presented to Laochra captain and son of Oliver Kelly, Cathal Ó Ceallaigh by Jim Murray Chair of the Antrim County Board and Aogán Ó Fearghail, Ulster Council President. Speaking at the presentation, Aogán said:

“It is a great honour for me to present this trophy as I knew Oliver very well form our time together on the Ulster Council. He was a true Gael and it is fitting that this competition is organised in his honour. I wish to congratulate Laochra Loch Lao CLG for organising and winning the competition. This strengthens their vision for properly linking both the Irish language and the GAA together and they are a shining example to the rest of the country. I’m positive that this competition can go from strength to strength in the future.

After lifting the trophy, Cathal Ó Ceallaigh said:

“I’m very proud to lift this trophy as captain of Laochra Loch Lao and my family are very grateful to everyone who supported the competition; the clubs who took part, the South Antrim county board, competition hosts Lámh Dhearg, St Galls CLG who provided the trophy, the referees and especially Laochra Loch Lao who organised it. We’re looking forward to next year and this victory is great preparation for ther National Gaeltacht Competiton in Mayo.’

Lainseáil foireann peile na Ceathrún Gaeltachta, Laochra Loch Lao CLG, corn peile úr do Dheisceart Aontroma aréir 12/5/10 i gCultúrlann McAdam Ó Fiaich ar Bhóthar na bhFál. Is in ómós don Ghael iomráiteach, Oilibhéar Ó Ceallaigh, atá an corn seo á reáchtáil, fear a bhí ina dhlíodóir cáiliúil agus ina iarChathaoirleach ar Bhord Chontae Aontroma CLG. Bhí beirt mhac s’aige, Diarmuid agus Cathal, a imríonn peile do Laochra Loch Lao, i láthair ag an ócáid agus dar le Diarmuid Ó Ceallaigh: ‘Is é an comhoidhreacht a d’fhág m’athair ionainn ná an grá don teanga agus an grá do spóirt Ghaelacha. Tá lúchair mhór orainn anocht an Corn bliantúil seo a lainseáil atá tiomnaithe i ndílchuimhne air. Ba mhaith linn fosta buíochas a ghabháil do Laochra Loch Lao CLG as an onóir seo a bhronnadh ar Chlann s’againn. Seasann Laochra Loch Lao d’achan luach ar chóir do Ghaeil na tíre seo a bheith ag iarraidh a bhaint amach agus mar sin de, tá sé breá feiliúnach go bhfuil na Laochra ag eagrú an chomórtais seo. Ag caint ag an ocáid fosta, bhí Paddy McElvenny, Rúnaí ar Bhord Dheisceart Chontae Aontroma CLG, a dúirt: ‘Is onóir mhór é do Bhord Dheisceart Chontae Aontroma bheith ábalta tacú le Corn Uí Cheallaigh agus le Laochra Loch Lao. Tá muid ag dúil go mór leis an ócaid stairiúil seo.’

Maidir leis an chomórtas féin, dúirt Cathaoirleach Laochra Loch Lao, Jake Mac Siacais: ‘ Tá Laochra Loch Lao ar bís le bheith ag stiúradh an chomórtais seo. Ar an Satharn beag seo, 15ú Bealtaine, beidh foirne Dheisceart Aontroma ag glacadh páirte i gcomórtas Bliantúil Uí Cheallaigh mar atá, Laochra Loch Lao, Lámh Dhearg, Gort na Móna agus Naomh Úna CLG. Thar cheann an chumainn, ba mhaith linn buíochas a ghabháil d’óstaithe na bliana seo, Cumann Lámh Dhearg agus le gach duine eile atá bainte leis an chomórtas. Tosaíonn an comórtas ag a 12 agus críochnaíonn sé timpeall a 3 a chlog. Beidh an corn á bhronnadh ag Leas-Chathaoirleach Bhord Aontroma, Jim Murray agus beidh bia agus soláistí ar fáil chomh maith le ceol traidisiúnta den scoth leis an sárghrúpa, CASADH i gcumann Lámh Dhearg ó 5 a chlog ar aghaidh.
Reachtálfar Comhdháil na Ceathrún Ghaeltachta ar an 14ú Bealtaine i gColáiste Feirste 7 Páirc Radharc na bhFeá Béal Feirste BT12 7PY. Am tosaithe 9.15rn. Clárú ón 8.30rn do dtí 9.o0rn.

Tá an dara comhdháíl de chuid na Ceathrún Ghaeltachta a reachtáil ar an Aoine beag seo an 14ú Bealtaine ag Coláiste Feirste. Is comhthionscadal é idir Fhorbairt Feirste agus Bord na Ceathrún Ghaeltachta le tacaíocht ó RFSTÉ.

Arna lainseáil na comhdhála dó dúirt Sean Mistéi Cathaoirleach Forbairt Feirste:

“Más mian linn bheith ar an Cheathrú Chultúrtha is fearr ar an domhán, ní mór dúinn próifíl s’againne a choinneáil agus a neartú, ach ar bharr sin caithfidh muid réimse d’institiúidí, d’acmhainní, de sheirbhísí agus de theicneolaíochtaí a fhorbairt agus a neartú, rudaí a n-aithneofar mar ‘scoth na hearnála’.

“Tá, ar ndóigh, ‘scoth na hearnála’ cheana féin sa Cheathrú Ghaeltachta, áit a bhfuil Otharlann thaighde den scoth, Coláiste Ollscoile den chéad ghrád agus scoil chuimsitheach dara leibhéal atá ar cheann de na cinn is fearr i mBéal Feirste.

“Tá tuiscint againn féin ar cé chomh hard agus atá spriocanna s’againn, ach caithfidh muid, le chéile, teacht ar chomhthuiscint, ar chomhinsint agus ar chomhchraobhscaoileadh ar uaillmhian s’againn agus níos tábhachtaí arís ar straitéisí atá dírithe ar bhearta agus táirgí.

“Tá téama an dara Comhdháil seo de chuid na Ceathrún Gaeltachta ag glacadh ionspioráide ó dhá eochair-cheiliúradh céad bliain a dhéanfaidh, i measc rudaí eile, an dara deichniúr seo den 21ú Aois a mhúnlú.

“In 2012 agus in 2016 déanfar ceiliúradh ar shíniú Chúnant Uladh agus ar Éirí Amach na Cásca. Tá an dá chomóradh seo fíte fuaite lena chéile agus ag croílár shaibhir agus coimpléasach stair agus féiniúlachtaí na hÉireann. Tugann na searmanais comórtha seo deis dúinn, le spás agus peirspictíocht, athchuairt a thabhairt ar an bhunbhrí agus ar an bhunfhuinneamh a bhí ann thiar sa lá, agus tugann siad deis dúinn ceisteanna cultúrtha agus féiniúlachta a chíorú agus a mheas agus a shníomh isteach i gcur chuige úr bunaithe ar chomhrath agus ar chómhaith an phobail. Ach ní haon amharc siar atá sa chomhdháíl seo, insíonn an scáthán dúinn cad atá taobh thiar dínn, ‘s’e an rud atá romhainn atá mar ábhar sa chomhdháil seo.”

The Destiny Decade Gaeltacht Quarter Conference will be held at Coláiste Feirste 7 Beechview Park Belfast BT12 7PY on Friday May 14th. Conference opening 9.15 am. The working language of the conference is English. Registration open from 8.30am until 9.00am.

The second Annual Gaeltacht Quarter Conference wiil be held this Friday May 14th at Coláiste Feirste. The conference is sponsored and organised by Forbairt Feirste and The Gaeltacht Quarter Board With support from DSDNI.

Launching the conference Mr Mistéil said:

“Becoming the best cultural Quarter in the world means retaining and expanding not just a profile but a portfolio of institutions, resources, services and technologies that can be labelled “best in class”.

“The Gaeltacht Quarter already has a “best of class” research hospital, a top rated University and one of the top performing mixed-ability post-primary schools in the city. Individually we know how high we are aiming, but we need to arrive at a collective expression of our ambition and strategies of delivery.

“The second annual Gaeltacht Quarter Conference takes as its theme and inspiration two key centenary celebrations which will characterise and help to define this, the second decade of the twenty-first, century in Ireland.

“2012 and 2016 mark the respective centenaries of the signing of the Ulster Covenant and the Easter Rising. Those commemorations are at the complex and rich core of Irish histories and identities. Such commemorations provide us with distance and perspective, but also a renewal of original energies, and they can be used to filter and channel questions of culture, identity and belonging into new arrangements for mutual prosperity and community well being: they enable recollection and re-collection.

But this is no look back: the mirror tells us what is behind, but what lies ahead is the goal of this conference

Bhí dúil mhór aige sa spóirt, iománaí agus peiladóir a bhí ann a d’imir sé polo uisce chomh maith, bhí sé mar chaptaen ar fhoireann náisiúnta na hÉireann sa polo uisce agus é naoi mbliana déag d’aois. Ar a bharr seo, d’éagraigh sé rith carthanachta i maratón Bhéal Feirste anuraidh agus rith sé píosa do chomh maith.

Dúirt Bean chéile Liam, Bernadatte, go raibh eiteos an chomórtais ag teacht go hiomlán le gach a sheas Liam fána choinne, ‘Ónós iontach do Liam atá ann agus bealach iontach le go chuimhníodh na páistí air’ ar sise.

“ Bhí Liam go mór i bhfách le daoine óga páirt a ghlacadh i gcúrsaí spóirt agus bheadh sé de shíor ag iarraidh iad a spreagadh chun baint a bheith acu leis an spóirt agus ag an am céanna, déanfadh sé gach iarracht cumainn áitiula a spreagadh le tuilleadh deiseanna spóirt a sholáthar to pháistí áitiúla.’

“Lena chois sin, bhí sé iontach paiseanta fán Ghaeilge, rud a léiríonn cé chomh féiliúnach agus atá an corn seo mar chuimhne air. Tá muid iontach brodúil.’

D’éirigh leis na Laochra maoiniú flaithiúil a fháil ó Iontaobhas Ultach a chuidigh linn íoc as an chorn, an sciath agus na boinn, a chur muid ar fáil d’achan imreoir óg a ghlac páirt sa chomórtas.
“Bhí sé d’aidhm againn síol peile Laochra Loch Lao agus na Ceathrún Gaeltachta i gcoitinne a phlandáil le peileadóirí óga ár mbunscoileanna agus d’éirigh go geal linn inniú.

Scoil na Fuiseoige emerged triumphant today at Óg-Chomórtas Peile Laochra Loch Lao 2010 when they lifted the Liam Ó Múirí Cup. The Liam Ó Múirí Sheild was lifted in the B section of the competition by Bunscoil Phobal Feirste.

Laochra Loch Lao CLG, the Gaeltacht Quarter Gaelic Football Team took another significant step forward today 29th April when they hosted the Laochra Football Festival. The competition for Belfast’s Irish Medium Primary Schools saw all ten schools in the city taking part. Three pitches were in use on the day, namely, Rossa Park, St Paul’s Park and Sarsfield’s park.

The competition’s main cup, the ‘Liam Ó Múirí Cup’, which was presented to Champions Scoil an Fuiseoige, is named in honour of well known Belfast Gael Liam Ó Múirí , who died tragically and prematurely in January 2010 after losing his long battle against illness. Liam a former Bunscoil Phobal Feirste pupil, played for St Paul’s CLG and worked full-time for The Council for Irish Medium Education.

Liam’s father Bob said naming the trophy after his son was a fitting tribute.

“We are delighted with the competition and we are very honoured that the cup and sheild are called after Liam. He was big into sport. He was a hurler and footballer and played water polo. He captained Ireland’s national water polo team when he was 19. On top of that he organised a charity run in last year’s Belfast marathon and ran a leg himself.

“This is a great honour and we are really proud that he is being remembered in this way.”

Liam’s wife Bernadette said the ethos of the tournament aptly represented everything that was important to Liam.

“This is a great tribute to Liam and a great way for the kids to remember him,” she said.

“Liam was a big advocate of youth in sport and was always encouraging younger people to be involved in sport as well as encouraging local clubs to provide more opportunities to the local children. He was also very passionate about the Irish language so this is a very fitting tribute to his memory and we are very proud that the cup has been named after him.”

Laochra Loch Lao succeeded in gaining generous funding from the Ultach Trust which helped purchase the trophy, the shield and the medals, that every young player who took part, was awarded. Each participant on the day also received a beautiful and authentic Laochra Loch Lao certificate thanks to Comhairle na Gaelscolaíochta, who have funded the design and print of the certificates.

“It was our aim to plant the Laochra Loch Lao footballing seed as well as the vision of the Gaeltacht Quarter with the young footballers from our Irish medium schools and today was a huge step forward in that regard. Thanks are due to O’Donovan Rossa CLG, St Paul”s CLG and Sarsfield’s CLG for allowing the use of their pitches on the day and to all those who contributed in any way to the success of today,” said Laochra Loch Lao Chair and Forbairt Feirste Director, Jake MacSiacais.
