Ag caint di ag an tar éis na hócáide, dúirt Orliath Nic Siacais, eagraitheoir na hócaide agus oibrí le Foram na nÓg,  go raibh an imeacht mar thoradh ar cheithre mí de réamhobair agus eagrúcháin, ‘D’oibrigh mé féin, Róisín Moody ó thionscnamh Cheantair Bhéal Feirste, agus baill de Chumann Ghaelach Coláiste Feirste le cupla mí anuas chun an ócaid seo a eagrú’ a dúirt sí.

I ndiadh bliantaí fada d’imeallú agus neamart, aithnítear go forleathan anois go bhfuil cainteoirí óga Gaeilge i dteideal seirbhísí óige ina dteanga dhúchais féin, agus gur cheart na háiseanna agus tacaíocht chuí a chuir ar fáil chun seo a chur i gcrích’

‘Bunaíodh Fóram na nÓg ocht mí déag ó shin nuair a tháinig scata díograiseoirí teanga agus óige le chéile leis an sprioc chun gúth aontaithe agus straitéiseach a thabhairt den obair óige. Tá 22 grúpa anois cleamhnaithe againn sa tuaisceart agus tá sé de chuspóir againn seo a láidriú sna blianta amach romhainn. Tá sé d’aidhm againn deis a thabhairt do ghlúin úr de Ghaeilgeoirí a gcumas iomlán a bhaint amach trí bheith mar cheannairí an lae amáraigh. Comhartha sóirt a bhí san oíche anocht ar cé chomh rathúil agus atá an obair a thug an seans don phobal sracfhéachaint a fháil agus ceiliúradh a dhéanamh ar dhaoine óga ionspióráideach s’againn.’

Belfast’s burgeoning young Gaels were recognised and celebrated in style last Thursday (31-3-11) night at Céiliúradh na nÓg in Coláiste Feirste. Organised by the Belfast branch of the North’s Irish medium Youth Forum, Fóram na nÓg, this historic celebration of young Irish speakers in the city, saw over 200 people pack into the main Hall at Coláiste Feirste for the presentation of a range of achievement awards, training and development certificates and top class entertainment from the young people.

The event was hosted by two young leaders from Cumann Ghaelach Choláiste Feirste, Dónall Ó Dochartaigh and Emma Ní Fhagáin, two newly trained Irish Medium Youth workers, who did a fantastic and very professional job on the evening. Chief Executive of the Belfast Education and Library Board, David Cargo, opened proceedings, by praising Forum na nÓg for sterling work in the promotion and development of Irish Medium youth work and the growing ‘partnership’ that they have developed with the BELB in Irish medium youth provision.

The ceremony primarily focused on recognising young Irish speakers in the city between the ages of 11 and 18 who have made and continue to make a positive contribution to their community and the Irish language revival in general. Interspersed with traditional music with Niamh Nic Ionnrachtaigh and Emmet Ó Gairmáile, Hip-hop from world champion Pádraigín Ní Bhrádaigh and modern Irish language rock from Seán Ó Coinn; the evening saw awards given out for Arts and culture, sport and contributions to the Irish language. In addition, scores of young people who participated in a variety of youth clubs and personal development programmes for young people through Irish, as well as those young people recently qualified in OCN level 1 and 2 leadership in Youth Work, were presented with certificates.

Speaking on the evening, event organiser and Fóram na nÓg’s Irish Medium Youth Worker, Orliath Nic Siacais, stated, ‘This fantastic event has been the  culmination of four months of preparatory work that myself, Róisín Moody from the West Belfast Area project and members of Cumann Ghaelach Coláiste Feirste have carried out. The success of the event and the massive attendance are an indication of the importance and relevance of Irish medium youth work and the great strides we have made in the past year. All the award and certificate recipients and their families should be immensely proud of their achievements. These young people are a credit to the language movement in the City and deserve praise and congratulations for their efforts. We’re already planning for next year’s event!

Closing the event, chairperson of Fóram na nÓg, Ciarán Mac Giolla Bhéin stated, ‘We’d like to thank Orliath, Róisín and the young people who took ownership of this event and made it a reality. We’re also grateful to those in the BELB, namely David Cargo, Trevor Murphy, Acquin Crawford and John Mc Laughlin for their help and support in providing the necessary statutory support and recognition that facilitated the growth of the Irish medium youth sector to date. Following years of marginalisation, there is a growing recognition that young Irish speakers are entitled to youth services in their native language and should be provided with the resources and support to make this a reality.

‘Fóram na nÓg was formed 18 months ago, as a coming together of a number of Irish language youth activists, aiming to provide a united and strategic voice to the sector. We now have 22 affiliated groups across the North and are planning to strengthen this in the years ahead. We aim to provide an opportunity to a new and confident generation of Irish speakers to reach their potential by becoming the leaders of tomorrow. Tonight was a testament to the success of this work and gave the community a chance to witness and celebrate our inspirational young people.’
