Ar maidin, Lá Bealtaine, 1/5/12, bhí scaifte daoine óga aclaí súimiúla in éineacht stiúrthóir Forbairt Feirste, Jake MacSiacais, agus iad ag déanamh a mBealach go Tor na Ríthe agus Barr an Dubhais.

Páistí ó rang an Uasal Eamonn Ó Faogáin, Scoil Naomh Colmáin a bhí ann agus iad ag tapadh an deis chun cur lena chuid Ghaeilge agus lena neolas ar Oidhreacht Bhéal Feirste.

Ba dheas an lá é agus rinne na páistí, na muinteoirí  agus na cúntóirí a mbealach ó Lósite na Dubhaise go barr binne, áit a raibh lón deas, fiú agus é gaofar, ag na leaids óga fad agus a d’eist siad le scéaltaí faoi aimsir an drochshaol in Éirinn.

D’eascaigh Forbairt Feirste an turas faoina chlár feasa Oidhreacht Feirste, a thugann deis do scoileanna, do grúpaí pobail agus do grúpaí aonaracha cur lena chuid eolas ar Oidhreacht na Gaeilge, ar seannachas, stair agus dinnseanachas áitiúl.

Dúirt MacSiacais i ndiaidh an turais:

“Scaifte iontach muinte macánta a bhí i daltaí an tUasal Ó Faogáin iad a a ndícheall chun cur lena chuid Ghaeilge. Ba chóir go raibh a chuid dtuismitheoirí agus an scoil brodúil astu agus ba chóir go raibh siad bródúil astu féin. Thug siad éisteacht mhaith dá raibh le rá agus ta súil agam gur seo céim eile ar a dturas foghlamtha agus a dturas saoil.”

This morning,  1/5/12, the first day of the Celtic Summer saw a group of young fit and interesting pupils journeying with Forbairt Feirste Director, Jake MacSiacais, to the Townland of Tornaroy and to the top of the Black Mountain in Belfast.

The pupils, from Mr Eamonn Ó Faogáin’s class in St Colman’s School Derryaghy were taking the opportunity to improve their Irish langauge skills and their knowledge of local heritage.

It was a lovely morning and the children, their teachers and assistants made their way from Divis Lodge to the summit of the mountain where the children had a very enjoyable if windy lunch while listening to stories of the famine times in Ireland.

The trip was facilitated by Forbairt Feirste under their awareness programme Belfast Heritage which gives schools, local groups and groups of indivduals the opportunity of learning more about local Irish Heritage and Culture

MacSiacais said after the trip:

“These pupils of Mr Ó Faogáin’s were as nice, as honest and as interested a group of young people as you are likely to encounter. They are a credit to their parents and their school and should be very proud of themselves. They made every effort to use the Irish they have and to improve on it. They listened carefully to what they were told and I hope that this was but another step in the educational and their life journey.”
