Celebrating Belfast’s Irish Pioneers

Gaeilge In 1971 bhunaigh grúpa de theaghlaigh ar Bhóthar Seoighe an chéad bhunscoil i mBéal Feirste. Thug ceannasaíochta s’acu smaointí úra chun cinn agus thug siad misneach de ghlún úr de cheannairí – cuid mhaith acu nach raibh an Ghaeilge acu féin ach a bhí togtha go mór leis an fhéidearthacht go dtiocfadh lena gcuid páistí féin bheith a oiliúint fríd an Ghaeilge.

An rud atá coitianta anois, bhí sé ina réabhlóid thiar sna blianta tosaí sin. Is é an rud a ghnóthaigh siad as san fhad thréimhse ná an athbheochán agus an borradh atá anois faoin Ghaeilge sa Chathair seo agus níos faide i gcéin.

I 2018 glacfar céim mór eile chun tosaigh, san aistear iontach seo, nuair a chuirfear críoch le atógáil £18m i gColáiste Feirste agus níl anseo ach tús le tionscadail i bhfád níos mó.

Chun suntas ceart a thabhairt don chloch-mhíle forbartha seo, tá Forbairt Feirste, áisíneacht forbartha na Ceathrún Ghaeltachta, ag cur cuireadh ar na coistí bunaithe sin teacht le chéile athuair. Glaoímís athchaidreamh ranga air.

An iarraidh seo beidh na sóanna orainn-ne ( ach thig libh a bheith a dual le crannchur ar ndóigh). Seans go mbeidh deis ann fosta airgead a chur ar chapall agus tintí chnáimhe a fheiceáil le deireadh a chur leis an oíche. Ach thar rud ar bith eile ba mhaith linn an deis a thapadh, ar an oíche speisialta seo, chun plaic a nochtadh in ómós do na coistí bunaithe a chuidigh chun an athbheochán a thabhairt chuig an pointe seo.

Ba mhaith linn chomh maith scéal an Spás Díon a roinnt libh, spás a dhéanfaidh, i measc eile, scéal an Ghaeloideachais i mBéal Feirste a insint. Ba mhaith linn cluinsteán uaibh na scéaltaí atá agaibh féín le go dtig linn iad a roinnt leis an domhán mhór.

Reachtálfar an oíche seo ar Lá Fhéile Bhríde 2018 ag Spórtlann na hÉireann ar shuíomh Ard na bhFeá.

English In 1971 a group of Irish speaking families on the Shaws Road formed the first Irish medium school in Belfast. Their leadership brought new ideas and new thinking and emboldened a new generation of leaders – many of whom were not Irish speakers but who were inspired to believe that their children could also learn through the medium of Irish.

What is now common place was revolutionary in those first formative years. The parents and committees that made it happen desired no recognition other than a good education for their children through Irish but they paid for it with long hours of fundraising and struggle. Their reward is the resurgence of the Irish Language.

In 2018 that reward will take another big step forward as Colaiste Feirste completes a £18m redevelopment, the lastest chapter in this wonderful journey. This is the beginning of an even bigger project.

In acknowledging this important milestone, Forbairt Feirste, the Gaeltacht Quarter development agency, is calling the many committees who made this success possible to come together once again. Let’s call it a kind of class reunion.

This time however the treats are on us (although expect a ballot or two). There may even be a horse to bet on and a firework at the end of the night. Most of all we want to use this special night to unveil a plaque which will include the names of the founding committees who have played such an important role in bringing Irish Medium Education to this wonderful point.

We also want to tell you about An Spas Díon, which among other things will tell the story of Irish Medium Education in Belfast. We want to hear and record your stories and tell the world how far we travelled.

This special event will take place on St Brigid’s Day 2018 at Spórtlann na hÉireann on the Coláiste Feirste Beechmount site.
