The World Bee Project and Forbairt Feirste announce Gaeltacht Quarter Bí Cruthaitheach – Bee Creative partnership initiative. 21/9/15

This joint announcement is made on behalf of The World Bee Project by Sabiha Rumani Malik, Executive Chairman and founder of The World Bee Project, and Chair of Forbairt Feirste Sean Mistéil, It is fully endorsed  by Professor Simon Potts, Co-founder of the World Bee Project and Co-Chair of the UN’s Global Pollination Assessment. It is also fully endorsed by Ciarán Magoill Chair of the Gaeltacht Quarter Board.

The World Bee Project and Gaeltacht Quarter Development Agency Forbairt Feirste have announced that their respective organisations have entered into a partnership agreement to address the global threat of bee decline, which has joined global warming, forest destruction, and species extinctions as one of our most urgent ecological challenges.

Speaking ahead of the upcoming Gaeltacht Quarter Recall Conference Sabiha Malik said that this threat to humanity coupled with Forbairt Feirste’s focus on indigenous language decline and the threat it poses to global cultural diversity have provided a challenge and an opportunity which both groups are keen to tackle.

“Bees perform about 80% of pollination worldwide and supply about 90% of the nutrition essential to human health.  Bees are a critical link in the food chain for humans and are doing work for free that would otherwise cost farmers in these islands £1.8bn to replace.  (The global economic value of the pollination service was estimated (as far back as 2005) to be US $215 billion (or 9.5% of global food production value.)” said Sabiha.

Addressing the Bí Cruthaitheach – Bee Creative initiative, she continued:

“We are committed to developing a Gaeltacht Quarter collaborative project, with citywide impact, that addresses education, heritage, culture and environment in view of the contributions bees make to human welfare. In the first instance, it will be important for us to scope out with regional and local government and other agencies, how the Gaeltacht Quarter can become the first quarter in Belfast to fully commit to addressing the bee decline as a challenge to both our islands’ food security and well-being as well as a catalyst for turning Belfast into a world leader in terms of being a bee friendly/diversity friendly city.”

Focusing on the interconnectedness of all peoples and stressing the need for local action Seán Mistéil said:

“Through this work we hope to attract the interest of multiple audiences, to inform them, and to advance levels of ecological knowledge and competence.

“I am delighted to announce the appointment of our first ten Sustainability Ambassadors, all students at Coláiste Feirste. This shows how a group of young people with no resources other than each other can create an environment which promotes learning, achievement and belonging.

“The partnership with the World Bee Project creates the context for further ethically sensitive actions which can contribute to the broader structure of society here in Belfast and around the world.  The elements which embody these actions are clear, value-rich and inclusive. They show how individuals can act in a larger structure of meaning and how they can better relate to and define each other.

“This intersection of local and global space captures the crossover between the individual and society.  Through the Bí Cruthaitheach – Bee Creative collaboration we can communicate the value of symbiotic relationships and the galvanising opportunities of collaboration, sharing and optimism. Most of all we want to reinforce the primary message of efficient and effective Government and Community actions, together with a sense of engagement as a set of multiple journeys involving destinations and – especially – connections.”

Endorsing Seán Mistéil’s welcome Professor Simon Potts, Co-founder of the World Bee Project and Co-Chair of the UN’s Global Pollination Assessment said: ”I very much welcome news of support for this World Bee Project/Gaeltacht Quarter partnership – this is a great opportunity to work together to protect the amazing diversity of bees which work so hard to pollinate our crops and ensure we have access to the highest quality fruits and vegetables.”

Carolina Arriagada Peters, Director of Partnerships highlighted that helping bees not only provides  a unique opportunity  to address global challenges, but also to come together as a city and embark on joint projects that generate economic growth and help bees, people and planet alike.

Welcoming the joint initiative, Agriculture Minister Michelle O’Neill, said: “I applaud the initiative and leadership demonstrated by the World Bee Project and Forbairt Feirste to address the decline in our pollinator species and protect the astonishing number of bee species in Ireland.  I am delighted that my Department is already engaged in a range of measures design to protect bees and provide additional habitats for pollinators in general.

“As part of the pollinator plan, DARD Forest Service Plant Health Unit continues to implement official controls to protect the health of locally managed honey bees and through the Strategy for the Sustainability of the Honey Bee we will continue to support Beekeeping Associations with the aim of achieving a sustainable and healthy population of honey bees for both pollination and honey production.

“DARD currently provides support to pollinator species via a range of options within existing agri-environment programmes.  For example, farmers can receive funding to maintain species rich grassland and establish new field margins which benefit a wide range of insects.  Similar measures including the minimisation of pesticide use will be encouraged under the new agri-environment scheme which is currently under development.”

Welcoming the collaborative partnership Minister for Culture, Arts and Leisure Carál Ní Chuilín said:

“I very much welcome this latest innovative partnership from the Gaeltacht Quarter and the World Bee Project, linking the challenge of securing biodiversity and tackling the challenge of bee decline with the challenge of saving indigenous language.”
