There was  a great turn out this morning, Tuesday March 28th, at Cultúrlann MacAdam Ó Fiaich in the heart of Belfast’s Gaeltacht Quarter for the launch of Gaelchúrsaí, a new Accredited Training and Employment company for the Irish Medium.

There has been great growth in the Irish Medium Sector over recent years and the need for more skilled people in the sector is more pressing then ever. GaelChursaí aims to provide training to young people so as to fill these positions. This enterprise has grown naturally from Forbairt Feirste’s ‘Towards Employment’ scheme which has been providing training for the sector since 1999.

At the event and welcoming the launch of the new enterprise were Education Minister, John Ó Dowd, Oonagh Hinds of Invest NI, who have assisted in the establishment of Gaelchúrsaí, Belfast Mayor and former Coláiste Feirste pupil, Niall Ó Donnghaile and Louise Green a student at Gaelchúrsaí, who was one of the founding pupils at Gaelscoil an Lonnain in Belfast’s Lower Falls.

Opening the event Gaelchúrsaí coordaintor Colma McKee said:

“As we are all aware there has been a fantastic growth in Irish Medium Education in this city over the past 40 years. That growth began with the establishment of Irish Medium Nursery and Primary schools and twenty years ago move forward with the establishment of second Level education at Coláiste Feirste. Here today we are taking the next step – Further Education through the medium of Irish.”

Concluding her speech Colma extended a hearty Failte to the main speaker of the day, Education Minister John O Dowd who said:

“We have witnessed rapid growth in the Irish Medium Sector in the north in recent years. It is therefore vitally important that our Irish speakers are well prepared for employment ensuring that they are equipped with the necessary skills to venture out into the world of work. I believe Gaelchúrsaí can make an imprtant contribution to making this happen and I wish them every success for the future.”

In her address Oonagh Hinds,  Invest NI Eastern Regional Business Team Manager said that she was delighted that Invest NI was in a position to assist this new enterprise, which was part of Invest NI’s efforts to grow the Social Economy so as to strengthen the provision of new jobs and job opportunities.

Belfast Mayor Niall O Donnghaile praised the work of Gaelchúrsaí especially in the light of current economic difficulties which were presenting particular difficulties for young people. He said:

“As we all know it has become increasingly difficult for our young people to find employment on leaving school. It is, therefore, important that they are trained and given as many opportunities as possible in order to increase their chances of gaining employment.  It is important to support companies such as GaelChursaí who do a wonderful job at nurturing, supporting and developing the skills of our young people to enable them to become part of our workforce in the years to come.”

Outlining the advantages which she had gained from an Irish Medium Education Galechúrsaí student Louise Green said that she felt that was greatly respected in her own right by everyone at Gaelchúrsaí, where the watchword was ‘praise the young and they will flourish’ a wachtword which was at Gaelchúrsaí a more of a living philosophy.
