The second annual ‘Féile Peile na mBunscoileanna’ is on our doorsteps again with the prestigious ‘Corn Liam Uí Mhuirí’ at stake again. Organised in conjunction with Gaeltacht Quarter Gaelic Football Team Laochra Loch Lao CLG, the Football Festival takes place on  Thursday 14 April 2011. The competition is directed at Belfast’s Irish Medium Primary Schools and  all ten schools from across the city including a school in Crumlin will be taking part. Three football pitches will be in use on the day, namely, Rossa Park, St Pauls Park and Sarsfields park and will last between 10 and three. This competition raises the profile of the Irish speaking Gaelic club amongst the young Gaels in the Irish Medium primary schools and makes a valuable contribution to the language revival in the city.

The competition’s main cup, the ‘Liam Ó Muirí Cup’, which will be presented to the winners on the day is named in honour of well known Belfast Gael Liam Ó Múirí, who died tragically and prematurely in January 2010 after losing his long battle against illness. Liam a former Bunscoil Phobal Feirste pupil, played for St Paul’s CLG and worked full-time for The Council for Irish Medium Education.

Seán Fennell, Head of sport in Falls Road Primary school, Gaelscoil na BhFál, one of the competition’s main organisers, said:  “We were greatly honoured last year to have been given permission by Liam’s family to name our trophy in his honour. He was a committed, brave and diligent Gael who stood for the all values that we expect from members of Laochra Loch Lao CLG and the Irish language community in Belfast.

‘All tens school in Belfast are taking part and this year which should amount to about 200 young people up at St Pauls and Rossa on the day. We’re starting at 9.15 with a short parade from Bunscoil Phobal Feirste on the Shaws Road, who are this year celebrating 40 years in existence as the North’s first Irish Medium school. Its 9-a-side, each team brings a panel of 12, and at least four girls have to be playing at all times to ensure the competition runs fairly. We have an A and B competition on the day, with Corn Uí Mhuirí going to the winners of A and Sciath Laochra Loch Lao(Laochra Loch Lao shield) going to the winners of B. Competiton will be fierce and each school well prepared to challenge last year’s winners Scoil na Fuiseoige and Bunscoil Phobal Feirste for the titles.’

‘The competition runs between 10 and 3 with both finals on St Pauls pitch with the trophies to be presented by the Ó Muirí family. We have medals for the finalists on the day and are delighted to team up with Laochra Loch Lao CLG again and Campa Chormaic Aontroma who will be awarding two scholarships to Male and Female players of the tournament for their fanstastic Irish language and GAA summer camp in August. We’re all looking forward to a great day.’
