Sular thosaigh an príomhchaint ag an Aire O’Dowd, taispeánadh físeán a bhí taifeadtha go speisialta don ócáid ag Clive Dutton, údar Mórphlean na Ceathrún Ghaeltachta. Tar eis dó a chur in iúl go raibh díoma air gan é a bheith abálta bheith ann ar an oíche, mhol Dutton an dul chun cinn atá déanta sa Cheathrú Ghaeltachta: “an tionscadal forbartha uirbeach is spreagúil agus is dúshlanaí san Eorap”.  Agus é ag guí gach rath ar an oíche dúirt an tUas Dutton: “leanaígí libh ag cur snás ar an seod seo.”

B’é an téama a bhí le léacht na bliana ná: “Is fearr agus is láidre an comhthoil ná gealltanas. Is fearr an gníomh na an briathar” agus ag labhairt dó ar an téama, d’fhogair an tAire O’Dowd go raibh roinn s’aige agus roinn an tAire Cultúrtha Caral Ní Chuilín, ag cur pacáiste infheistíocht ar fiú £486,000 isteach i dtionscadal forbartha ‘Áras na bhFál’ ar fiú £2,250,000 ar fad é. Is tionscadal soch-fhiontraíoch de chuid Iontaobhas na Gaelscolaíochta é Áras na bhFál a rachas aon bhrabús chun socair Gaelscoileanna úra.

Ag leansteán leis agus bhéim ar an chomhthoil, thug an tAire O’Dowd  le fios go raibh sé brodúil as an dul chun cinn atá déanta in éarnáil na Gaelscolaíochta le blianta beaga anuas fríd an comhpháirteachas atá forbartha idir phobal na Gaeilge agus na húdarais reachtúla agus go raibh sé den tuairim go raibh an Gaeloideachas fréamhaithe anois sa chóras oideachas ó thuaidh ar bhealach nach gcreidfeadh duine ar bith tamall de bhlianta ó shin. Dúirt sé fosta gur thuig sé go soiléir go raibh i bhfad níos mó le déanamh agus ina thuairim féin go raibh agus go mbeadh ról nach beag le himirt ag saoránaigh aonair, ag grúpaí Ghaeilge agus ag an sochaí shibhialta chun an comhionnanais agus an comhurraime a chinntiú. “Tá an obair seo i bhfad róthabhachtach le bheith fagtha faoi polaiteoirí amháin,” a dúirt sé.

D’fhogair an tAire O’Dowd fosta go raibh sé ag díriú aird ar cheist sainriachtanais oideachasúla in éarnáil an Ghaeloideachais agus é  ag plé leis na scairshealbhóirí cuí chun an bealach is fearr chun tosaigh maidir leis an cheist tabhachtach seo don éarnáil.”

Ag cur fáílte roimh an fhogairt a rinne an tAire O’Dowd dúirt Stiúrthóir Iontaobhais na Gaelscolaíochta, Pilib Ó Ruanaí: “Is céim mór eile chun tosaigh é seo maidir le cur chun cinn agus infheistiú sa Cheathrú Ghaeltachta. Fáíltímid roimhe agus táimid ag tnúth le tús a chur le hÁras na bhFál a rachas chun socair éarnáil an Ghaeloideachais agus a chuirfeas cloch eile in áit i bhforbairt fisiciúil na ceathrún seo atá ag dul ó neart go neart.”

Belfast Gaels had an inspiring and highly enjoyable evening on Saturday November 29th when Education Minister, John O’Dowd came as guest of honour to Cultúrlann MacAdam ó Fiaich to deliver the 10th annual Cothaigh lecture. His speech was well received by the 100 guests in attendance at the annual Gaeltacht Quarter dinner and celebration, hosted by Forbairt Feirste and one of the highlights of the Fleadh Feirste festival held each year in the last week of November.

Before the main address of the evening there was a showing of a short video specially recorded for the occasion by author of the Big Gaeltacht Quarter Plan, Clive Dutton. After expressing his disappointment at being unable to be there on the night Dutton went on to applaud the progress which has been made in the Quarter: “The most exciting and inspiring urban regeneration project in Europe.” Wishing everyone a successful evening Dutton concluded: “Keep polishing this diamond.”.

The theme of the evening’s lecture was: “Consensus is stronger than a promise. Actions speak louder than words” and addressing the theme Minister O’Dowd announced that his department, in conjunction with the department of Culture minister, Caral Ní Chilín, was making available a capital investment package of £486,000 for the Áras na bhFál development which will complete the overall investment in this £2.25m project. Áras na bhFál is a socio-economic project headed by Iontaobhas na Gaelscolaíochta and surplus income generated from the project will be invested in new and developing Irish Medium Schools.

Continuing with the theme Minister O’Dowd said that he was proud of what had been achieved in the Irish Medium sector over recent years through the building of consensus between the Irish language community and the statutory authorities and that he was of the opinion that Irish Medium education was embedded in the education system in a way which many would not have thought possible even a short number of years ago. He added that he clearly understood that much more remained to be done  and that he was convinced of the need for individuals, Irish language groups and civic society to play and continue playing an active role in promoting and developing and ensuring the delivery of equality and mutual respect. “This work is much too important to be left to politicians alone,” he said.

Minister O’Dowd also indicated that he was currently focusing on the important question of addressing the area of special educational need in the Irish Medium sector and that he was engaging in discussions with the relevant stakeholders to identify the most effective way forward in relation to this issue.

Welcoming the Minister’s announcement in relation to the Áras na bhFál project, Irish Medium Trust director Pilib Ó Ruanaí said: “This is another step forward in relation to infrastructural investment in the Gaeltacht Quarter. We welcome it and look forward to commencing the work on Áras na bhFal which will benefit the Irish Medium Education sector into the future, provide another stepping stone in the physical regeneration of the Gaeltacht Quarter, and which continues to go from strength to strength.”
