For the sixth consecutive year Forbairt Feirste and GaelChúrsaí have hosted their annual Employment Fair aimed at students in Gaelscoileanna and those studying Irish in the English Medium schools. The innovative project, started in 2006, has attracted thousands of pupils from across the six counties to Coláiste Feirste in the heart of Belfast’s Gaeltacht Quarter since its inception and this year was no exception with record numbers again making their way to the Jobs Fair.

The 2012 Fair was held on Thursday 6/12/12 in the Belfast’s burgeoning Irish Medium second level college Coláiste Feirste.  Schools in attendance came from across Belfast while many also joined them from across the six counties, with schools travelling from Counties Antrim, Down, Derry, Tyrone and Armagh to avail of the opportunity to mix with their Belfast counterparts not least those from Coláiste Feirste itself.

Speaking after the successful event, Colma McKee, Co-ordinator of the Irish medium further education company Gaelchúrsaí, the main organiser of the Employment Fair, stated that she was delighted with the energy, solidarity and general interest shown in the 2012 event and said that she was delighted that this year’s Gathering had been even more successful than those of previous years.

“This innovative Employment fair gives employers a unique opportunity to learn about the advantages of bilingualism and to tap into a well of highly skilled young people in the burgeoning Irish language community. In addtion, it brings employers from across the country, Irish language organisations, businesses and companies and a wide-range of educational providers to the heart of the Gaeltacht Quarter to showcase information stalls for the pupils.” she said.

The popular educational seminar, ‘Additional advantages of the Irish language’ was also a feature of the 2012 Jobs Fair making it the third year in a row. This addition to the Jobs Fair, provided in partnership by Coláiste Feirste, Comhdháil Náisiúnta na Gaeilge and Comhar na Múinteoirí Gaeilge saw three seminars taking place in the Coláiste Feirste’s lecture theatre  with Belfast musician and singer Gráinne Holland, Tyrone GAA coach and Campa Cormac founder Dónall McAnallen and the BBC Irish Language Unit’s, Tyrone native Lynette Faye, addressing groups of pupils whilst the main Jobs Fair was in full swing in the Coláiste Feirste main hall.

Once again this year students taking part in the seminars had the opportunity to win one of two half scholarships which were on offer for the Machaire Rabhartaigh and Bun an Inbhir Gaeltacht. Thanks to Gael Linn two half scholarships worth £275 each were awarded to the lucky pupils.
