Art students from Coláíste Feirste  joined with their counterparts from Ashfield Girls’ High School in East Belfast today 9/913, in a sketching day in Belfast’s Gaeltacht Quarter, as part of  the Forbairt Feirste inspired art project  ’Between Two Minds’.

Ashfield High art Teacher Valerie McKeag and her Coláiste Feirste colleagues Róisín NicGiolla Bhríde agus Caragh Ní Cholmaín, joined artists Michael Doherty and John Stewart, with assistance from Forbairt Feirste, to guide twenty pupils from the respective schools around the Gaeltacht Quarter on a day-long sketching tour  which will inform their joint art exhibition to be staged at the Cultúrlann’s Dillon art Gallery in the months of May and June 2014.

“Today was a great start which gave everyone the chance to get to know each other and gave the young art students a chance to get some images down on paper. Every journey begins with a single step and today’s first step was a good one towards the joint journey which will culminate in an innovative co-exhibition which will allows us to view each other’s areas through the eyes of our neighbours,” said project director Jake Mac Siacias.

A second sketching day will take place at the end of this month in East Belfast which will enhance the store of images which will form the basis of the public art exhibition launching the Celebrating the Volunteers Project in May next year which commemorates the role of the Belfast Protestant Volunteers in providing a guard of honour for the Catholic priest as he made his way to read mass in Belfast’s first Catholic Church in Chapel Lane on May 30th 1884.
