City HallLitir Oscailte Chuig na Comhairleoirí Úra. Open Letter to Non-Unionist Councillors.

IS MITHID DEIREADH A CHUR LEIS AN tSEAN-RÉ.

Litir oscailte chuig Comhairleoirí, nach Aontachtaigh iad.

Tá an Chomhairle úr tofa. Agus muid isteach sa mhandáid úr seo is mithid dul chun cinn éifeachtach a fheiceáil ar an ghealltanas fadseasta chun Cathair Ilghnéitheach Chomhionannach a fhorbairt. Tá Bord na Ceathrún Gaeltachta le fada an la ag plé leis an Chomhairle ach le rófhada theip ar an Chomhairle dul i ngleic leis an cur in éadan a bhí ann maidir le cur chun cinn na Ceathrún Gaeltachta, mar sócmhainn agus mar cheann de cheathrúnacha tarraingeacha na Cathrach. Anois agus mandáid úr ann ba mhaith linn dul chun cinn a fheiceáil ar an cheist seo. Seo roinnt pointí le meabhrú orthu.

  • Is iad na Aontachtaigh an bloc vótála is lú sa Chomhairle. Níl neart vótála acu ach vóta amháin chun tosaigh ar an pháirtí is mó sa Chomhairle, Sinn Féin.
  • Ní thig le hAontachtaigh breis ná 19 vóta a fháil.
  • Tá sin 12 vóta gann ar thromlach.
  • Níl Aontachtaigh ábalta cosc a chur ar rudaí a thuilleadh agus ní féidir le páirtithe eile iad a úsáid anois mar leithscéal don easpa cothromais agus comhionannais.
  • Ní gá d’éinne margadh a dhéanamh le hAontachtaigh chun cearta saoránach a bhaint amach.
  • Is féidir leis na páirtithe eile aon pholasaí ar mhian leo a bhaint  amach gan a bheith ag brath ar thoil Aontachtaigh.
  • Is féidir le páirtithe fosta tromlach vótála a chur le chéile gan ligint do Alliance iad féin a chur chun tosaigh mar idirghabhálaithe.
  •  Má cuirtear vótaí an Alliance agus vótaí na nAontachtach le chéile níl ach 29 vóta san iomlán ann. Dhá vóta gann ar thromlach.
  • Má tá páirtithe ag déanamh margadh caoithiúl le hAondachtaigh caithfidh siad a mhíniú an ar son cearta saoránaigh atá siad a dhéanamh nó ar chúiseanna caoithiúla eile.

An open letter to all non-unionist Councillors in Belfast.

The new Council is now elected. As we face into the new mandate it is high time to effectively deliver on the long-promised aspiration of Belfast as a ‘Diverse City of Equals’. The Gaeltacht Quarter Board has long engaged with Council but Council has failed, thusfar, to break down the reluctance  of some to embrace and promote the Gaeltacht Quarter as one of the vibrant, open and welcoming quarters of the city and as an asset for residents and tourists alike. Given the make up of the new Council we would hope to see progress in this regard. Here are some points we would like you to consider.

  • Unionists are now the smallest combined voting block in Council.
  • Unionists can only muster 19 votes.
  • That is 12 votes short of a majority.
  • Unionists can no longer block the aspiration for Belfast as a Diverse City of Equals.
  • No one now needs to do deals with Unionists in Belfast to deliver for citizens in a non-partisan way.
  • Parties can now develop and promote fair and equitable policies, which are section 75 compliant, without needing to seek Unionist approval or Unionist votes.
  • Parties can garner working majorities without allowing Alliance to play the role of arbiter.
  •  The combined Alliance and Unionist vote is 29, two votes short of a majority.
  • If parties continue  doing deals with Unionism they must explain if it is to deliver ón voters’ aspirations or for other more expedient reasons.

Combined Non-Unionist Strength with Alliance 41 votes.
