Bhí na céadtaí i láthair ag Halla Uladh Dé Céadaoin 5/12/12 mar chuid d’ócáid stairiúil a bhí a reáchtáil ag Foras na Gaeilge i gcomhar leis an Chomhairle Ealaíon.

Reáchtáladh Féile Leabhar na Nollag sa Spás Grúpa i Halla Uladh, áit a raibh deis ag daltaí scoile agus an ghnáthphobal páirt a ghlacadh i léamha agus i seisiúin díospóireachta, ceardlainn agus turasanna staire.

Bhí stiúrthóir Forbairt Feirste, Jake MacSiacais ann, i measc an chomhluadar agus é i mbun an chéad turas ar an bhfoirgneamh trí mheán na Gaeilge.

Ócáid stairiúil a bhí ann do na daoine a rinne freastal ar an Fhéile, an chéad fhéile Gaelach a reáchtáladh sa Halla ó bhí Feis Bhéal Feirste ann go deireannach i 1909.

Bhí seisiúin éagsúla ann i gcaitheamh na maidne ceann acu ina rinne Máire Zepf  léamh óna leabhar Tubaiste ar an Titanic agus ceardlann eile le Mícheál Ó Ruairc, údar an leabhair Tóraíocht Taisce i measc leabhair eile. Agus leath chuid de na daltaí scoile i mbun na seisiúin seo tugadh an chuid eile thart ar Halla Uladh le haghaidh turais ar stair an fhoirgnimh.

Ag am lóin bhí Lóin Liteartha, G-Chaint ann agus Ciarán Ó Pronntaigh i mbun comhrá leis na scríbhneoirí Feirsteacha, Ciarán Ó Dornáin agus Deirdre Ní Ghrianna.

Bhí coincheap an phreabshiopa ann i rith an lae faoin téama BUY-lingual nuair  a bhí deis ag daoine a bhí ag freastál ar an ócáid rogha na leabhair Ghaeilge a cheannach ó lucht an Cheathrú Póilí.

Agus le chríoch ceart a chur leis an chéad Féile Leabhar na Nollag, bhí an dara seisiún liteartha ann faoi théama G-Chaint nuair a chur eagarthóir Ghaeilge an Irish News, Robert McMillen na scríbhneoirí Philip Cummings agus Séamus Mac Annaidh faoi agallamh idirghníomhach leis an scaifte a bhí i láthair.

“Eispéireas iontach agus stairiúl a bhí anseo,” a dúirt Sean Mistéil ón chomhlucht Mitchell Kane a rinne an Féile a éascú, “chuir sé go mór leis an dóigh a mbíonn lucht díolta agus lucht ceannaithe Leabhair Ghaeilge ag plé lena chéile agus thug sé díolacháin Leabhair Ghaeilge go Lár na Cathrach ar dhóigh a bhí pléisiúrtha, spreagúil agus nualaíoch.”

The Ulster Hall played host to hundreds of Irish speakers on Wednesday 5/12/12 as Foras na Gaeilge in partnership with the Arts Council staged an historic Irish Language Christmas Book Fair in the Belfast City Centre venue.

The event, held in the Group Space of the Ulster Hall, gave students and members of the general public the opportunity to take part in book readings, debating sessions, workshops and historical tours.

Forbairt Feirste director, Jake MacSiacais staged a series of tours throughout the day giving the first ever Irish language tours of the Ulster Hall, its history and some of the highlights of famous events held there over its long and varied existence.

The Iriosh book fair was in itself an historic affair for those attending as it was the first Irish Fest held in the Ulster Hall since the Belfast Feis of 1909.

There were various sessions throughout the morning with readings and workshops hosted by author Máire Zepf, who read from her recently published book Tubaiste ar an Titanic as well as a workshops held by Kerry author Mícheál Ó Ruairc, who read from his own work including Tóraíocht Taisce. As one half of the student groups attended the workshops the other half were taken on an Irish language tour of the famous hall.

Over lunchtime a literary lunch event was held with Ciaran Ó Pronntaigh hosting G-Chaint with Belfast authors Ciarán Ó Dornáin agus Deirdre Ní Ghrianna.

A pop-up shop concept added to the day’s events under the theme of BUY-lingual, where those in attendance had the opportunity to purchase a wide selection of Irish language books courtesy of Gaeltacht Quarter book vendors an Cheathrú Póilí.

And to round off proceedings on what was a very busy and varied day for the first Irish Christmas Book Fair, there was a second helping of G-Chaint with Irish News Irish Language Editor, Robert McMillen, conducting a lively and interactive session with authors Philip Cummings and Séamus Mac Annaidh.

“This was a wonderful and historic experience,” said Sean Mistéil from local company Mitchell Kane who facilitated the event, ” it added greatly to the way in which book sellers and the buying public interact with eachother and it also brought the sale of Irish language books to the very heart of Belfast City Centre in an exciting, pleasurable, inspiring and innovative way.”
