Next Tuesday May 17th will see an International day of action in defence of the Galician Language and Culture and Belfast along with over 50 other centres across the globe will hold symbolic events in solidarity with the Galician people under the common slogan of: “Stop the attacks against the Galician Language”.

The Belfast event to be held in Culturlann MacAdam Ó Fiaich at 4pm on Tuesday will coincide with similar events being held in places as widely diverse as New York, Madrid, Barcelona, Tenerife and Buenos Aires.

The International Day of solidarity was announced in the Galician capital Santiago de Compostela on May 10th by a coordinating committee called  “Queremos Galego” (We are for the Gailician Langauge), which represents over 700 local associations who are concerned about the effect of regional government policy which is limiting the use of the Galician Language particularly in the judicial and public sectors and in the fields of further and higher education.

Francisco Javier García Villaamil, a Galician expatriate working in Belfast, is one of the organisers of the Cultúrlann event. He said it was important for all those who recognize the value of traditional cultures and languages to show their support for peoples struggling against damaging government  policies which will leave us all culturally poorer.

Speaking ahead of Tuesday’s event Francisco said:

“Galician Language activists have grown increasingly alarmed at the damaging linguistic policies of Alberto Núñez Feijóo the president of the Xunta de Galicia (the Galician Regional Government) and the worrying degree of intolerance towards any expression of the Galician Language or culture.”

Echoing Francisco’s words Forbairt Feirste’s Feargal Mac Ionnrachtaigh, who is co-hosting the Cultúrlann event said:

“Tuesday’s act of solidarity will provide an opportunity to hear at first hand the concerns of our friends in Galicia. We will hold a short event which will include a symbolic reading from some of the leading figures in the world of Galician Literature to demonstrate that this is one of the living languages of Europe and one which we all should act in defence of.  We hope that as many people as possible will gather in An Ceathrú Poilí, the Cultúrlann bookshop on Tuesday next at 4pm for a short act of solidarity with those struggling to preserve and defend Galician Culture.”
