Beidh Foireann Peile CLG na Ceathrún Gaeltachta, Laochra Loch Lao,  ar scáileáin teilifíse s’againn ar an Luan seo chugainn, 22 Samhain ar BBC2 NI ag 10pm, i sraith de dhá chlár teilifíse nualaíoch.  Leanann an sraith úr Gaeilge s’againn scéal Laochra Loch Lao agus iad ag ullmhú do agus ag glacadh páirte i gComórtas Peile na Gaeltachta, cómórtas peile iomráiteach atá oscailte d’fhoirne ó cheantair Gaeltachta amháin.

Ó bunaíodh Laochra Loch Lao i 2006 tá siad ag dul ó neart go neart. I ndiadh ddo Cheathrú Ghaeltachta Iarthar Bhéal Feirste stádas Gaeltachta a fháil, bhí fhios ag an cumann, atá déanta do Ghaeilgeorí ó thrí chumann CLG in iarthar na cathrach go mbeadh siad in ann dul san iomaíocht in aghaidh na bhfoireann is fearr ó Ghaeltachtaí timpeall na tíre, rud a bhí mar aisling acu le fada. Ag cur síos orthu, dúirt eagraithe an chomórtais gur léirigh na laochra gach treith a bhaineann le “foireann Gaeltachta” mar gheall ar tiomóntas s’acu do labhairt na Gaeilge. ‘S’é an ghlórmhian atá acu ná an corn a thabhairt abhaile leo go hIarthar Bhéal Feirste, le cliú a tharraingt ar Cheathrú Gaeltachta na Cathrach.

Tá réimse leathan de chúlraí ag baill na foirne. Ta múinteoirí agus dlíodóirí, díograiseoirí pobail, tiománaithe tacsaí agus fiaclóirí ina measc, iad á gceangal le céile ag an ghrá atá acu don Ghaeilge agus don pheil, agus ag an dúil láidir atá acu an comórtas a bhaint. ‘S’é captaen fhoireann Aontroma, Paddy Cunningham an t-imreoir is cáiliúla agus is luachmhaire atá acu i mbliana.

Sa chéad chlár buailfimid leis an fhoireann agus iad i mbun ullmhúcháin, go fisiciúl agus go síceolach, don chomórtas.

Buaileann na himreoirí i gcoinne dúshlan, a chuireann lena mian agus lena n-iarracht. Tá glúin gortaithe ag a gcaptaen, an múinteoir áitiúil Seámus Ó Tuama.  Beidh sé ag streacailt le fisiteripé agus b’fhéidir ag dul faoi scian le bheith réidh in am don chomórtais.

Buailfimid leis an Cailín Gaelach, Gráinne Holland a bheas ag imeacht leis an fhoireann go Béal an Mhuirthead, áit a mbeidh an comórtas ar siúl. Glacfaidh sí féin páirt sa chomórtas An Cailín Ghaelach. Beidh iomaitheoirí an chomórtais sin á meas ar a bpearsantach agus ar a mbuanna, ní ar a n-áilleacht amháin.

Sa dara clár feicfimid brú na hócáide ar an fhoireann agus iad ag imeacht go Beál an Mhuirthead le himirt sa chomórtas. Thabharfaidh siad aghaidh ar fhoireann Na Dúnaibh as Tír Chonaill sa chéad bhabhta. Cluiche crua a bheas ann agus caithfidh siad á bhaint le leanúint ar aghaidh sa chomórtas agus le seans a bheith acu an corn a thógáil ag an deireadh.

Beidh Gráinne ag mothú faoi bhrú fosta. Beidh uirthi a dícheall a dhéanamh an teideal a choinneáil sa chlub mar bhuaigh an t-ionadaí Feirsteach anuraidh é.

Ní hamháin go bhfuil an fhoireann ag iarraidh corn na peile a bhaint, ach ba mhaith leo aird atharraingt ar Cheathrú Gaeltachta Bhéal Feirste.

Dúirt léiritheoir/stiúrthóir na sraithe Céara Ní Choinn; “D’oscail an clár seo mo chuid súl. Chuaigh tiomántas agus dílseacht na n-imreoirí go mór i bhfeidhm orm. Ní fhaca mé riamh a leithéid. Chomh maith leis sin, thug an diograis atá acu ó thaobh na Gaeilge de, ar an pháirc agus taobh amuigh de, inspioráid dom. Is daoine ar leith iad.”

Dúirt Feargal Mac Ionnrachtaigh, rúnaí Laochra Loch Lao; “ Rinne foireann peile na Ceathrú Gaeltachta gaisce le Gaeilgeoirí na Cathrach a chur chun cinn i measc cheantair Ghaeltachta na tíre seo. Bunaíodh an club I 2006, agus ó shin i leith, is ceannródaithe iad an dream seo Gaeilgeoirí lena dtógra pobal-bhunaithe, cultúrtha agus spórtúil atá i ndiaidh athbheochan na Gaeilge a thiomáint ar aghaidh taobh amuigh den tseomra ranga. Tugann na cláir úrnua seo ón BBC deis do phobal níos leithne na hiarrachtaí atá ar siúl a fheiceail ar an scáileán mhór; ó chomórtas Liam Uí Mhuirí do daltaí bunscoile, go dtí na déagóirí ag comórtas “Seachtar gach taobh” sa Ghaillimh, go dtí comórtas Oliver Kelly a bhí mar ullmhúchán don chomórtas náisiúnta, go dtí buaicphointí comórtas peile na Gaeltachta é fhéin i Maigh Eó, comórtas an Chailín Ghaelaigh san áireamh—tugann na cláir seo léargas eisiach de Ghaeil Bhéal Feirste i mbun gnímh.”

Is léiriú de chuid Imagine Media Productions do BBC TÉ é Laochra Loch Lao, a fuair tacaíocht ó Chiste Craoltóireachta Gaeilge Scáileán Thuaisceart Éireann. Rachaidh an darna chlár amach ar an Luan, 29 Samhain, ar BBC2 fosta, ag 10pm. Mar sin féin, an oíche roimhe, De Domhnaigh 28ú Samhain ag 7.30pm, beidh Laochra Loch Lao CLG ag déanamh lainséail foirmiúil agus ag taispeáint an dá chlár i gcomhpháirt le Imagine Media Productions san Amharclann i gCultúrlann McAdam Ó Fiaich mar chríoch air ar Fléadh Feirste, Feile na Ceathrún Gaeltachta 2010. Cuirfear ceol traidisiúnta, bia agus soláistí fíona ar fáil ar an oíche.

Gaeltacht Quarter GAA team, Laochra Loch Lao, are hitting the TV screens next Monday night, 22 November on BBC2 NI at 10pm, in a groundbreaking new two-part documentary. This new two-part Irish Language series follows the story of the west Belfast based Gaelic football team, Laochra Loch Lao as they prepare for and compete in the Comórtas Peile na Gaeltachta, a prestigious Gaelic football tournament open only to teams from Gaeltacht areas in Ireland.

Since they formed in 2006 Laochra Loch Lao have gone from strength to strength. After west Belfast’s Gaeltacht Quarter received Gaeltacht status, the club, which is made up of Irish speakers from three West Belfast GAA clubs, knew that the door was open for them to enter the competition and fulfil their dream of playing alongside teams from every Gaeltacht in Ireland.  They have been described by the organisers of the competition as a great example of everything a Gaeltacht team should be because of their commitment to the spoken language. Their dream is to bring a trophy back to west Belfast, putting the city’s Gaeltacht Quarter firmly on the map.

The team come together from all walks of life. The players’ professions are as far ranging as teachers, community activists, solicitors, taxi drivers and dentists.  What unites them is their love of the Irish language and Gaelic football and their determination to win.  The captain of Co. Antrim, Paddy Cunningham, is their secret weapon this year.

In the first programme, we get to meet the team and watch as they train and prepare, both physically and mentally, for the competition.

Players come up against setbacks, which serve as fuel to their fire. Séamus Ó Tuama, local teacher and team captain, is suffering from a knee injury and faces the prospect of surgery and physiotherapy in order to rehabilitate in time for the competition.

We are also introduced to the ‘Cáilín Gaelach’ or ‘Gaelic Girl’ Gráinne Holland, who will be accompanying the team to the competition, being held this year in Belmullet, Co.Mayo. The contestants are not judged on their appearance but on their overall personality and talents.

In the second programme the pressure is really on as the team travel to Belmullet to play in the competition. In their first match they will face Downings from Co. Donegal. It’s going to be a tough game which they must win if they are to proceed through the competition and have any chance of lifting the coveted trophy.

Gráinne, competing in the Cáilín Gaelach competition, is also under pressure.  She is fighting to hold onto the title which was won by Laochra’s representative the year before.

It’s not just the football trophy that’s at stake for the boys from Belfast.  For Laochra Loch Lao it’s also about putting Belfast’s Gaeltacht Quarter firmly on the map.

Producer/director Céara Ní Choinn says; “Working on this story was an eye- opener for me.  Laochra Loch Lao’s drive and commitment for the game matched anything that I have ever seen.  Moreover their dedication to the Irish language on and off the pitch was truly inspirational.  They are a force to be reckoned with.”

Feargal Mac Ionnrachtaigh, secretary for Laochra Loch Lao says; “The Belfast Gaeltacht Quarter Gaelic Football team have placed the City’s Gaels firmly on the map amongst the island’s Gaeltacht regions. Formed in 2006, this collection of  Belfast gaeilgeoirí have pioneered a bottom-up, community, cultural and sporting project that has brought the Irish language revival to life beyond the confines of formal education. These groundbreaking BBC programmes will allow the wider community to experience these efforts on the big screen; from the Liam Ó Muirí tournament for primary school children, the teenagers at the seven a side competition in Galway, the success of the Oliver Kelly tournament in preparation for the national competition, the trials and tribulations of the football tournament itself in Mayo including the famous Cailín Gaelach competition – these programmes provide a behind the scene glimpse of the Belfast Gaels in action.’

‘Laochra Loch Lao’ is an Imagine Media Production for BBC Northern Ireland with support from Northern Ireland Screen’s Irish Language Broadcast Fund. The second programme will go out on Monday 29 November, also on BBC2, at 10pm. However, the evening before, Sunday 28th November at 7.30pm, Laochra Loch Lao CLG will be doing a formal launch and screening of both programmes in conjunction with Imagine Media Productions in the Cultúrlann McAdam Ó Fiaich Theatre, as the grand finale to this year’s Fleadh Feirste, Gaeltacht Quarter Festival 2010. They are inviting, players, families, supporters, club founders, the GAA community as well as the wider Irish language community to join them. Traditional Music, food and wine refreshments will be provided.
