Tutors Fran Balaam and Michael Corr from the London Metropolitan University have just completed a visit to Belfast’s Gaeltacht Quarter where they were engaged in a nine day work and study visit with 15 students from the University’s Faculty of Design and Architecture. The Belfast work and study visit was conducted as part of the Blackbird of Belfast Design Project which is seeking to develop ideas, visions and projected developments for the Gaeltacht Quarter.

The concept of the Blackbird of Belfast Project arose from a visit which Michael made to Belfast’s Gaeltacht Quarter in May of this year when he was one of Forbairt Feirste’s guest speakers at its .

The project itself will entail 15 senior students from the Faculty of Design and Architecture working under the direction of Fran and Michael during a year-long project which seeks to research and map out proposals for the physical development of the Gaeltacht Quarter.

For the duration of their work visit to Belfast, from the 11th until the 20th of November, the team worked from a shop front space located at the heart of the Gaeltacht Quarter. During their stay the students and tutors  met with local residents and organisations and, in partnership with Forbairt Feirste, they organised a research workshop on November 16th and an exhibition of their impressive work to date on November 20th.

There will be other periodic exhibtions of the work as it progresses through its various stages both in London and in Belfast between now and summer of 2011, culminating in an end of project exhibition to be hosted in the Gaeltacht Quarter during Féile an Phobail/The West Belfast Festival in August 2011.
