D’fhás Tionscadal Oidhreacht Ghaill ‘s Loch Lao as cuairt a thug Forbairt Feirste ar Mhainistir Naomh Gallen thiar in 2007 mar chuid den chomhthionscadal Fiontraithe le Gaeilge, a reachtáladh i gcomhpháirt le hOideas Gael agus Fiontar DCU.

Táthar iarracht a dhéanamh chun na deiseanna atá ann chun sampla na Manach Éireannacha a úsáid chun ardán poiblí a thógáil as an saibhreas cultúrtha a d’fhag siad mar oidhreacht againn.

Dúirt Mac Siacais:

“Thiar in aimsir an Ré Órga las na manaigh Éireannacha laisir spioradálta a loinnrigh sa dorchadas agus a las tine bheo i gcroíthe pobal éagsúil fud fad na hEorpa. D’fhag na manaigh chéanna, as stuaim a ndúthrachta agus a n-ealaíne, oidhreacht scríofa shaibhir, a bhfuil a macalla le cluinstin go soiléir go fóill thar na céadta fada bliain go dtí an lá atá inniú ann.

“Déanann Oidhreacht Ghaill ‘s Loch Lao macalla an tsaibhris seo a threisiú go bhfuaimeoidh sí in ardghlór le pobal labhartha na Gaeilge agus leis an phobal ar suim leo an Cultúr Gaelach agus  ar bharr sin díreoidh sé aird mhór phobal Loch Lao agus mórphobal na hEorpa ina n-éagsúlacht iomlán, ar an chomhoidhreacht luachmhar seo.”

Beidh mórcheiliúradh an ‘Gallusjubilaum’ a reachtáil i  Naomh Gallen féin i 2012 a dhéanfas ceiliúradh agus comóradh ar an oidhreacht shaibhir a d’fhag na manaigh Éireannacha ag Naomh Gallen agus ag an Eorap trí chéile.

Agus iad i Sankt Gallen bhuail an t-uas Finn agus an t-Uas MacSiacais le Iwan Kopell atá ar an choiste eagraíthe de chuid an Gallusjubilaum. Socraíodh go ndéanfar fiosriúcháin faoi féidirtheachtaí maidir le gné Éireannach den ceiliúradh a chinntiú agus go ndéanfar imeachtaí a reachtáil idir an dá áit chun cinntiú go dtógfar ar na nascanna tabhachtacha idir Loch Lao agus Naomh Gallen.

Forbairt Feirste director, Jake Mac Siacais and St Mary’s University College Principal Professor Peter Finn were guests in Saint Gallen, Switzerland recently when they travelled to the central European country on a fact-finding and bridge-building visit to the Canton and City of Sankt Gallen from the 8th til the 11th of Septemeber.

Both were guests of  professor Thierry Volery from the University of  Sankt Gallen and travelled to Switzerland to strengthen links between Sankt Gallen and the Belfast’s Gaeltacht Quarter in the context of the Saint Gallen and Belfast Lough Heritage project.

The Saint Gallen and Belfast Lough project grew out of a visit made by Forbairt Feirste to the Monastery Library of Saint Gall in 2007 which was part of the Irish in Entrepreneurship project which was a joint venture with Oideas Gael and Fiontar DCU.

The visit was also aimed at renewing links and adding new ones in an effort to ensure that the opprotunities for highlighting and following the example of the early Irish monks by building a public platform for the celebration of the rich heritage which they bequeathed to us.

Mr MacSiacais said:

“In the Golden Age of Irish Monasticism Irish monks lit a spiritual flame which illuminated the darkness and ignited a living fire in the hearts of people across Europe. Those same monks, by dint of their own diligence, ardour and art, left a rich written heritage, whose echo still sounds clearly across more than 1000 years until the present day.

“The St Gallen/Loch Lao Heritage Project focuses on the echo of that cultural richness elevating it anew and giving full modern voice to this shared heritage for the Irish speaking community, for those who value Irish Culture and also for the wider community of Belfast Lough and indeed all of Europe in all their diversity.”

A huge jubilee celebration will be held in 2012 to celebrate the founding of the monastic settlement of Sankt Gallen in the year 612 and this jubilee year of celebrations will commemorate this heritage which is of huge European significance.

Whilst in St Gallen Mr Finn and Mr MacSiacais met with Iwan Koppel, one of the organising committee for the 2012 St Gall Jubilee celebrations. It was agreed that they would with their colleagues in St Gallen explore the possibilities for ensuring that there is a strong Irish dimension to the jubilee and all agreed to work on concrete proposals for joint events between St Gallen and the Gaeltacht Quarter and for budiling on the links established to date.
