Thursday night last, 21st February saw Forbairt Feirste Director, Jake MacSiacais join a local group at St Matthew’s Church on the Shankill Road for a presentation and talk on the heritage and placenames of Shankill. The gathering was also joined by a group from St Oliver Plunkett parish.

The evening was very kindly organised by the Revd Tracey McRoberts Minister of St Matthew’s Church which is built on the site of the oldest attested spiritual site in Belfast.

MacSiacais’ talk concentrated on an account of the history, placenames, heritage and placenames’ lore of the Civil Parish of Shankill. A pleasurable and interesting evening was had as those present were invited to get acquainted with – among others – an Irish speaking Grand Master of the Orange Order, who played his part in the Irish Language revival of the 19th Century and the Land League MP for Mayo who hailed from the Shankill Road.

Speaking after the evening MacSiacais said: ” This event was one in a series of talk which Forbairt Feirste undertake and facilitate to raise the status and profile of Irish and to provide opportunities for local people to get an increased awareness and experience of Irish as it realates to their local area.”
