There was a full house in Cultúrlann MacAdam ó Fiaich’s Dillon Gallery on Saturday November 30th for a talk by Queen’s University’s Dr Charlie Dillon, on the theme of the newly unearthed volumes of Robert Mac Adam’s 19th century Comparative Lexicon.  And adding a special aspect to the occasion was the presence of one of the priceless books loaned for the day under the care of Linen Hall Library employee, Mary Delargey.

Forbairt Feirste organised Saturday’s event in partnership with Club Leabhar Choiscéim Feirste and the Linen Hall Library and with generous help from Belfast City Council.

Dr Dillon’s inspiring and highly informative and engaging talk, entitled, ‘Belfast Literary Gems’, was held as part of Fleadh Feirste, the Gaeltacht Quarter Festival. The event also marked the opening of an exhibition of MacAdam’s seminal work and other Irish Language holdings at the Linen Hall Library which will remain on display until Saturday December 7th.

The Belfast Literary Gems Project is an initiative by Forbairt Feirste, Through the project Forbairt Feirste are helping to build links between Club Leabhar Choiscéim Feirste, which is housed in Cultúrlann McAdam Ó Fiaich, the Gaeltacht Quarter’s cultural and arts institution, and the Linen Hall Library, one of the city’s foremost literary institutions.

This initiative shines a light on the extant volumes of Robert McAdam’s Comparative Lexicon circa 1885, which are a hugely important part of the literary history and heritage of Belfast’s Irish-speaking and wider community.
