Four Belfast Gaeilgeoirí from across the generations were at Belfast City Hall on Tuesday last, February 19th to present Cairt Bhéal Feirste 400 (The Belfast 400 Charter) to the City’s Lord  Mayor Alderman Gavin Robinson.

Each of the four was representing one hundred Irish speaking citizens of the city who have signed their names to Cairt Bhéal Feirste 400, which asks the Lord Mayor and the City Councillors, to draft a comprehensive policy for the promotion of the Irish Language in this year Bliain na Gaeilge (The year of the Irish Language) when we are celebrating the Gaelic renaissance.

The preamble to Cairt Bhéal Feirste 400 an Irish language document notes (in English translation) : “We, the undersigned 400 Irish speaking citizens of Belfast, ask the current Lord Mayor and all city councillors to present this Charter Cairt Bhéal Feirste 400 to a meeting of the full council for debate and to ensure that proper cognisance is taken of the role of the riches of the Irish Language and Culture, as a significant and integral part of the City’s heritage. We are launching this Charter in this landmark year when we celebrate Bliain na Gaeilge/The year of the Irish Language, a celebration of 120 years of the modern Cultural renaissance of the 19th Century, when Conradh na Gaeilge/The Gaelic League was established , and in this ‘celebratory’ year of the granting of a town Charter to Belfast by the English King James I in the year 1613.”

Other senior officers of the council including Robert Heslip, City Heritage Officer, Hazel Francey, head of Good Relations and Robert Corbett, City Archivist, joined the Deputy Chief Executive. Speaking at the presentation event Séamas thabked those who had kindly and graciously welcomed the Irish Speaking delegation to City Hall. He also noted: “There are those who belive the world to be 6000 years old and those who believe this City to be 400 years old. We are simply and respectfully reminding them that they are, in our opinion, wrong on both counts.”
