Gaeltacht Quarter Conference 2010 / Comhdháil na Ceathrún Gaeltachta 2010

Highly impressive turnout at West Belfast Destiny Conference

Local Government ministers, representatives of government departments and agencies, Members of Parliament and Elected Assembly Members, representatives of a wide range of political parties, Councillors from Belfast, County Down, County Armagh and County Tyrone, visitors and keynote speakers of international repute and people from the business, community and voluntary sectors from North, South, East and West Belfast flocked to Coláiste Feirste in the heart of the Gaeltacht Quarter for the second Gaeltacht Quarter Conference.

The gathering, entitled the Destiny Decade Conference, was hosted by the Department of Social Development, the Gaeltacht Quarter Board and was organised and chaired by Belfast Irish Langauge Development Agency, Forbairt Feirste, to shine a spotlight on the huge opportunity which currently exists to unleash the potential of the Irish Langauge and Culture to the benefit of Belfast’s citizens in their entireity and in all the diverse richness.

The Gaeltacht Quarter plans, publsihed by Deloitte PLC, were shared with the 141 conference delegates who attended and an impressive to scale model of the Quarter, assembled by architects Tara Florence, Lana Wilson ans Aoife McGee, was also unveiled on the day.

Opening the conference shortly after 9am and extending a huge Belfast welcome to delegates, Conference Organiser Jake Mac Siacais, director of Forbairt Feirste, took the opportunity to thank the Department of Social Devleopment for its generous support and sponsorship of the conference and wished delegates success in their deliberations before asking East Belfast MLA Dr  Ian Adamson to do the honour of introducing the first speaker of the day Deputy First Minister, Martin McGuinness.

Dr Adamson set the bar high for the day and had delegates smiling and enthused with his, witty, entertaining and highly informative introduction for the Deputy First Minister, whom he described as being descended from the great Clan MacAonghusa / McGuinness clan, among the oldest of Ireland’s leading families.

It was then the turn of  Máirtín Uí Mhuilleoir, Managing Director of the Belfast Media Group, to introduce the second key speaker Minister Margaret Ritchie, MLA, MP, from the Department of Social Development, main sponsors of the event.

Mr Ó Muilleoir was followed by  Gearóid Ó Cairealláin, Chair of Cultúrlann MacAdam Ó Fiaich awho introduced West Belfast MP, Gerry Adams  to the conference with the quip that he was the only MP whose votes were weighed rather than counted.

As if delegates hadn’t been impressed enough by the first three keynote speakers these were followed in the morning session by Sean Mistéil, Chair of Forbairt Feirste, Ciarán Magoill, Chair of the Gaeltacht Quarter Board Kelvin Campbell, from Urban Initiatives of London and Tony McCusker from the Community Relations Council.

CONFERENCE FEEDBACK:

“The conference was inspirational. We were delighted to be involved with a project of such energy, enthusiasm and ambition and are not only excited by what has been achieved already but what might be in the future. The dedication and hard work of everyone involved to make a lasting social and economic difference to West Belfast that is rooted in language and culture should be applauded and supported.” Michael Corr Design for London

Thanks very much for a very enjoyable conference last Friday and well done to all concerned. Colette Quinn DCAL
